Good to see things haven't changed with Pong. He's back to "defending" his title again no-hope opponents like he often did the last time he was champion. The 20-8 Masuda lost his last fight, making him the sixth title defense Pong has made against guys who lost their previous fight. That's gotta be some kind of record. Even Erdei hasn't done that -

Wonjongkam had been a great champion. People tend to underrate him just because he had beaten nobodies. It was his promoter's job to choose his opposition, so he just kept doing what he was asked to do. I've seen a lot of Wonjongkam. He would have clearly defeated Arce back then.
Even so, choosing Masuda is making no sense even to Japanese boxing fans. As soon as Naito's injury heals, they should unify in their 5th meeting in the ring. That's what interim and full champions are expected to do.Comment

I think he was very talented, but I don't think we can call him a "great champion" or "underrated" if he has, as you say, beaten nobodies. I can't call anyone a "great champion" if he hasn't fought anyone even remotely great. (Narvaez is in the same boat, IMO). Naito and, more recently, Miranda, are probably Pong's best wins and neither are best in the division, let alone great.
Re: Acre. We will have to disagree on that one. Acre was very hot at the time he was Pong's mandatory and interim champion, and Pong, with all his talent, would have had to fight the fight of his life to match him. I do think, with their styles, it would have been one hell of a fight with a million punches thrown and probably at least a few knockdownsComment
