Will Cotto and Pacquiao get paid to fight for a belt?Is there room for another major sanctioning body in the world of professional boxing?

This scribe feels as if there are enough alphabet championships to keep Campbell's Soup in business for years to come.

But news from a secret source tells me that a fringe professional boxing sanctioning body is looking to put their brand in the center of boxing's biggest fight for 2009.

With the WBO welterweight title in limbo for Manny Pacquiao's clash with Miguel Cotto on November 14, the International Boxing Association is looking to sanction the battle - with a special twist.

"The IBA is looking to sanction Cotto - Pacquiao for their welterweight championship at the 145 limit," said the source. "But here is the kicker, a major corporation will be paying the sanctioning fees and then lining the pockets of Cotto and Pacquiao with serious cash."

The corporation sponsoring this event was not disclosed, nor the sum of money possibly coming Cotto and Pacquiao's way, but one thing is clear, the IBA might be looking to change the face of championship boxing by paying the fighters for a world title clash.

This would be a refreshing turn of events, if true, and put an end to the bickering between Team Cotto, promoter Bob Arum, and WBO President Paco Valcarcel over the $150,000 sanctioning fee for the WBO belt.

For now, let us file this under "Rumor" and hope that someone would pay boxers to battle for a belt.
Now that is desperation, the IBA is trying to gain some credibility by begging.
