No, Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn't twisting my arm while I'm writing this, and his uncle Roger doesn't have me in a chokehold either but as far as round one of the trash talk war goes between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Dana White together with UFC, I’d have to give it to “Money May”. Besides if Floyd is as passionately against MMA as he says he is, he wouldn’t have a chance of twisting my arm (he wouldn’t have the skills to do it). I’d get that sucker in a “kimora” in a heartbeat.
Floyd accused the UFC of being a sport for white dudes that can’t fight. By white, Floyd is pertaining to white American fighters of course as how most blacks usually do.
“It takes true skills to be in the sport of boxing, and mixed martial arts is for beer-drinkers. Boxing is for everybody. I mean, you can't take my shoes off and take my shirt off and just throw me in a cage. You do that with animals, you don't do that with humans,”
Floyd said and added,
“In boxing, we know who's dominating. Black fighters and Hispanic fighers is dominating in this sport. And this is not a racial statement but [Ed. note: Here comes the racial statement] there's no white fighters in boxing that's dominating, so they had to go to something else and start something new."
Well, if former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin’s performance against Anderson Silva was any indication, then I must say Mayweather got a point. Not convinced? Well the highly touted Kenny Florian further solidified Mayweather’s accusations by simply being outclassed by BJ Penn. Mayweather is right in the sense that when UFC broke throigh mainstream here in the US, they were marketing superstars like Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin and Chuck Liddell. Now that the sport is actually evolving and bringing elite fighters from other countries and other MMA promotions, white fighters are starting to look more and more like bottom-dwellers and undercard fighters than legitimate superstars. Now this isn’t to say I agree with Mayweather but in terms of facts and the point he was trying to get across, white fighters in MMA are quickly getting exposed.
Name the best fighters in MMA today.
Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko, George St. Pierre, Miguel Torres, Lyoto Machida. You get the point.
Floyd also gets some points for his statement about MMA being a sport for beer drinkers based on this video of the crowd at UFC 101 below. I guess it’s also notable that it’s a predominantly white crowd. But then again, any sport with a large male viewership is a beer drinker’s sport right? Regardless though, Philly did kind of made Floyd sound like a rational man with his actions.
All jokes aside, it was a really disgusting display coming from Philly fans. They should’ve known better- but then again, Philly fans are known for such acts like booing and pelting Santa Claus with snow balls so I guess it should have been expected.
On the real though, Floyd and Dana White can go on forever with their feud and none of them will truly come out as the clear-cut winner. Boxing and MMA is like comparing apples and oranges, chocolate and milk and bananas and pajamas. They are simply two different things; two different sports that equally require a lot of training and discipline. It's not a race thing either. With all the back and forth however, the true winners are the fans. With criticism and competition, both sport will be pushed to improve their product. Rivalries aren't such a bad thing and is all but common in sports in general. Oh perhaps there's another winner in all of this- the beer companies.
