Ivan Robinson Remembers his Two Fights with Arturo Gatti

Here is an excerpt of the recorded conversation I had with Ivan Robinson, who beat Arturo Gatti in the 1998 Fight of the Year and Upset of the Year, and repeated the act in the rematch.

More will be available in next month's Boxing Digest Magazine when my article commemorating the life and career of Arturo Gatti is released.

    ------------------------

"In every athlete's career, it doesn't matter if he's a swimmer, a boxer, a basketball player, somewhere along your career you decide that you want to become an athlete that people remember. I don't remember what time or what event it happened. You just try to fight every fight as if it's your last and give 100%."

"I said that somewhere along my career people will know who I am across the world. There had to be a fight that people would recognize for and God knows I never thought it would be Arturo Gatti. Before me and Arturo Gatti fought, we was in camp with Pernell Whitaker getting him ready for Oscar de la Hoya. I personally thought Pernell Whitaker won."

"I saw we were both being promoted by the same company, in the same camp and working with the former lightweight champion of the world."

"You have those remarkable days and nights, the August 22 fight was a fight that I will never forget as long as I live. I'm hoping that people who saw that fight will put that at the top of their lists. I know Gatti had three killer fights with Micky Ward but I think my two outweigh those three fights."

"I can't walk around with no tattoo of Arturo Gatti like that was my guy like that. That man helped me get on the map. Gatti helped me put my family in a great home, he helped me with the cars that I have, he helped me get my name out there."

Robinson is punchy? Didn't know that, hope he's doing OK.

hey Ryan wassup bro, serious question here I'm just curious, you were found on this message board and given this job interviewing fighters and writing columns? I forget which thread but I remember a while ago I read something like that which if true is absolutely amazing, that is a very cool story to tell man, it shows that you have a natural gift to write because if thats true then out of the 1,000's of guys who sign up and post here your posts/threads stood out which is awesome..

The Robinson fights were great, TRUE classics man props to Robinson for upholding the Gatti name, hopefully more people do the same as he was a Boxing legend and star.. R.I.P Arturo Gatti
