boxing managers trying to sign me to a contract, questions

here's the thing: there is a manager who wants to sign me to a contract while I'm still doing the amateur thing and leaning towards the Golden Gloves tournament next year, so that way if I turn out to be good no other managers/people in boxing would "steal me".

    What's the advice?

Don't sign ****...Well... maybe for a few fights but not a 10 year contract or anything.

10 year contracts are suspect. I've spoken to small time promoters before and the contracts they give their fighters are for 2 years. Just enough time to prove themselves.

Any more advice is great. Like percentage of how much one would get. I came from the music biz so I know what artists usually get, but not boxing. And I know it can't be 50/50. LOL. Maybe 70/30. 70 for the fighter.

Look for anything better than 70/30.

          70/20 then?

          Actor's manager/agent get 20% usually.

Music artists between 10-12% (record sales), (50/50 publishing sometimes), etc.

I need to know about boxing. Managers are out to make money too you know?

Funnily enough. I've never heard of a 70/20 split as that would mean 10% of the money vanished. I think you should go to some local shows near where you live and start getting to know the scene and the people. What about your amatuer coaches and the like? They must have some knowledge of the game where you live....?

Do the tourney but honestly the way ametures and profession boxing is they are so different. How many ameture fights have you had thus far? What is your weight class? How old are you? Where are you from? What type of fighter are you? Power puncher, speedster, technical boxer type? Are you orthrodox or south paw?

That aside a manger in boxing should never get more then 15% DON'T FORGET YOU HAVE TO SPLIT YOUR CASH WITH YOUR PROMOTER AND THE MANAGER DOESN'T FRONT YOU ANY $$$ he is just there to negotiate deals with your promoter and make sure you don't get screwed...Also see who else he manages and what their carrers are like....LEFTY

                  not even close my man

managers, good ones REAL ones, often foot the bill on TONS of things.

Training camps- sparring partners have to get paid equipment needs to be bout sometimes renting a gym out, travel etc

Equipment- for training and for fights. Trunks robes corner jackets shoes all cost money.

plus if a fighter is that good then a few managers will give them monthly stipends to keep them from working.

ask Frankie J whose father is one the best managers in boxing bar none he'll tell you how costly it is to run a fighter's career

as for the ammy who is looking for advice.

who is the manager? I know quite a few of them and can give you some advice if you like. I know of a few ammy fighters who have professional managers "assisting" them in taking care of their needs.

I wouldn't sign **** saying they can steal you if I was you... you can turn pro whenever you want, so go to the Golden Gloves Tournament and do your best, after that if you feel you would like to go pro then keep your options open, contact those guys and some other guys and see what is the best deal.

Just a little advice mate, cause the steal you bit sounds extremely dodgy to me to be honest.

Another good idea would be to ask your coach, in all fairness its easy to ask us other guys when we are not in the same position, maybe if you ask a coach at your gym as well as asking for some feedback from us he might be able to give you some better advice.
