Pac used uppercuts wit Diaz and DLH cuz he could hit those guys wit whatever the hell he felt like. Normally that's 1 punch completely absent from his arsenal. Not like Roach couldn't scout Cotto and add the uppercut for this fight tho.

Zabs left uppercut is his best punch, no way can Pacquiao throw and land them like Judah can.

Pacquiao's straight left will be a key weapon against Cotto.

pacquiao contrary to what some think threw a lot of different punches in his younger days.

if you watch his old fights he threw a lot of hooks , uppercuts , overhands , etc.

the problem was he was too wild with it and left himself open too much.

that's how the basic right jab and left straight pacquiao came about.

it was to get pacquiao not to be so wild and leave himself open.

turning into a basic 1-2 , jab-straight fighter helped him from getting caught coming in wild.

now as he evolved roach has re-introduced some of those punches manny use to throw back then but had him throw it properly and not so wild.



the uppercut is not a big deal for this fight.

the reason the uppercut is so effective against cotto is because he leaves his gloves to the side of his face.

with guys like margarito who threw looping punches , the uppercut was their way of getting their punches straight up the middle of cotto's gloves.

with pacquiao who throws very straight left hands , the uppercut is not as needed. he can use to straight lefts to get in between cotto's gloves without having to resort to the uppercut.

to throw an effective uppercut you have to be in close. i doubt in close is where pacquiao would want to be in this fight.
