Before all of you Pacquiao "Supporters" abruptly dismiss my claim, please take my points below into consideration. I hear all of this talk about hand speed, but that is deceptive when considering who your opponents are. I feel as if each fighter has blossomed into excellent champions since their emergence into the world of boxing, and each has been faced with adversity in their respective paths in the sport. So I wont dig too far back into their careers.
Take Cottos & Pac's last 5 fights
Cotto: Joshua Clottey, Michael Jennings, Antonio Margarito ( We will leave Alfonso Gomez off this list cause he is a bum)
, Shane Mosley, & Zab Judah
Pacquiao's: Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, David Diaz, Juan Manuel Marquez, & Marco Antonio Barrera
Miguel Cotto IMO has faced fighters who can actually box and put together combinations with hand speed. He has faced big punchers with quick hands (Clottey, Mosley, Judah) and boxed them effectively, counter punching, control with the jab (which I think will be the difference in the fight vs Pac), he boxed on his feet, he utilized tremendous body work in all of his last 5 fights. (The Margarito fight is up for debate because we all know he cheated and has been cheating for quit sometime, its just fortunate for Boxing and for fighters that ****m Richardson noticed the plaster on Margaritos Wraps) & yet Cotto didnt get Knocked Out, maybe beat up bit not knocked out from the former "Most Feared WW in the World". Cotto was outboxing Margarito IMO, but hey **** happens.
He "ATE" left hands from Zab Judah (while it lasted), Plenty of plastered right hands from Margo, all Shane Mosley did was throw right hands and Cotto ****** those up "PAUSE".
Pacquiao's last 5 fights are against fighters with decent hand speed and versatile punching at best. Marquez is the exception and I believe this is the reason why Manny has trouble with Marquez's style. (Marquez brings the fight to Manny and really dictates the pace of the fights). I am not going to dispute who really won or any of that because the fact remains they fought to a Draw & a SD. David Diaz has no hand speed and is a stationary target, DLH showed ZERO signs of hand speed. By the time Pac fought Barrera he was not in it to win it.
So does Pac really have the faster hands? I think Miguel Cotto is the Stronger & More Versatile puncher. Manny has no jab and isnt a consistant body puncher IMO. Miguel has stood toe to toe, fought on the inside, boxed from the outside, controlled the ring and has backed down the TOP Welterweights in the division. I think Pac's last few fight have made his "Speed" seem much faster than it really is. If you watch Cotto fight, he always works behind the jab to set up the right hand, then he works the body and goes back up. Miguel Cotto has a good chin at this weight & it doesnt matter how fast people think Pac is, in a series of exchanges I expect Cotto to get the best of Pacquio.
