Bernard Hopkins could fight Tomasz Adamek yet.

The fighters’ promoters -- Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and Kathy Duva of Main Events – are scheduled to meet on Thursday in New York to discuss a possible cruiserweight matchup in January in Newark, N.J., on HBO.

Hopkins and Adamek have been here before; they tried to make a fight for last month. However, Adamek rejected a $500,000 flat fee to fight Hopkins and Hopkins wouldn’t budge.

Schaefer said Adamek will be offered more than that this time around. Still, Duva is being cautious.

“I might walk into the meeting and come out an hour later with a deal,” she said. “It depends on whether they’re serious. The fact we’re having this meeting is an indication they are serious. I’m not going to start jumping and down, though.

“I felt they were serious the last time, too, and they came with that offer. They know the offer will have to be different for us to get anywhere.”

    Schaefer sounded very optimistic.

“He wants a historically significant fight, which this would be,” he said.

Hopkins also could pursue the winner of the Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson fight on Nov. 7. However, the timing of that fight would preclude a fight against Hopkins two months later.

“Bernard turns 45 in January [on the 15th],” Schaefer said. “What we discussed with HBO was making it a 45th birthday celebration. And, obviously, it’s easier to lock in an Adamek fight because he’s not fighting in November.

“Bascially, he’s open to either one, though.”

Adamek is still considering a heavyweight fight against Andrew Golota in Poland or another heavyweight fight this year, possibly even if a deal if reached to face Hopkins. Obviously, if he fights at heavyweight, his cruiserweight title would not be at stake.

Duva said the bottom line is that Adamek wants to stay busy.

“I don’t feel the thing to do is sit around and wait for a fight on HBO,” she said. “If we can stay active, do what we’ve been doing, I think that’s in Tomasz’s best interest. If the thing with Hopkins works out, great. If not, he has to have back up plans.”
