World flyweight champion and Ring magazine’s number 7 ranked Pound-for-Pound best boxer in the world Nonito Donaire Jr. aka “The Filipino Flash” is ready to rumble on August 15 for his title-fight against Panama’s Rafael Concepcion as the headliner of “Pinoy Power 2” at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
Following suit to the nationalistic theme of the fight card, Donaire will be wearing a Philippines themed pair of Everlast boxing boots designed and customized by yours truly. It was an honor for me to be tapped by Team Donaire to pay tribute to our Filipino roots. Growing up in the Philippines, it was almost unimaginable for Filipinos from my generation to realize a major fight card in Las Vegas promoted by the biggest promotional company in the sport, Top Rank, to pay homage to Filipino boxers by showcasing some of the best talents to ever come from the Philippine archipelago.
I spoke to Nonito on the phone when he received the shoes and told me,
“I love it. It bears the colors of the Philippines and the “war” red our flag embodies which I bring into the ring to defend our country’s honor every time I fight and is also flashy and stylish like me. The shoes really captured what I’m about. I love it. Thanks D!”
On the contrary, thank you.
Thanks to the efforts of Manny Pacquiao and Donaire together with the rest of the Filipino boxers like Brian Villoria, Gerry Penalosa and Luisito Espinosa and Gabriel “Flash” Elorde before them who have helped the Philippines carve its niche in the global boxing scene, Filipino boxers are finally getting the respect and recognition they have been long due.
As a Filipino I am proud to have been able to make my little contribution, with the partnership of Team Donaire, to highlight the world-class talent Filipinos possess. Boxing is just an example, but Filipinos are definitely some of the best out there namely in the medical field, arts, entertainment and the especially at the “work your butt off industry” just to name a few.
I am a writer first and foremost and Donaire indeed has a tough test before him in Concepcion on the 15th. Concepcion is also responsible for derailing the career of former undefeated and hot prospect AJ Banal last year when he knocked out Banal in the 10th round last year in Cebu city, Philippines. That is why Donaire is training harder than ever. Watch out for my exclusive interview with Nonito tomorrow as he updates me on the progress of his camp going into the 15th.
Writer’s Note: R.I.P. to former Philippines president and the world’s first ever female president Corazon C. Aquino.
