I don't think Robinson deserves to be ranked #1 since he achieved more as middleweight. Has everybody forgotten Oscar De La Hoya, Ike Quartey, Hearns, Duran, even Oba Carr??
who is the greatest welterweight to ever lace gloves?

Leonard beat Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Wilfredo Benitez and lost to Duran (UD)
Hearns beat Pipino Cuevas and lost to Leonard (TKO) Hearns biggest body of work at championship level was at 154.
Robinson beat Sammy Angott x 3 (lightweight champ), Marty Servo x 2 (future Welter champ), Fritzie Zivic x 2 (former Welterweight champ), Jake Lamotta x 2(Robinson weighed 145 Lamotta 157 So Ray weighed in as a WW at the time of same say weigh ins), Henry Armstrong (you know who he is), Tommy Bell, Kid Gavilan, Charlie Fusari. Lost to Jake Lamotta once (Lamotta weighed in as a MW Robinson as WW so you could add this to Rays WW resume since I added his two wins over him when he weighed in under the limit.
This is a time without multiple belts where being a title challanger actually meant something.Comment

Carr doesn't deserve to be mentioned anywhere near Leonard or Hearns. Neither does DLH he lost his 2 biggest fights at Welter he "lost" to Tito, Mosley, Pacquaio (older oscar).

I think Hearns was a better fighter than Leonard all in all. He lost their first fight because he gassed out. He was ahead on all three scorecards, by 4,3 and 2 points. He had Leonard in his pocket, then let him go. He proved how great he was in the second fight and that weight limit was better for him. He was way too skinny as a welterweight.
The 2nd fight isn't a measure of two fighters in their primes, Hearns was the better technical fighter but Leonard IMO was the better overall fighter. leonard was smarter Hearns when he went out there he fought the same way everytime fight tall behind the 1-2 which was very effective. Leonard was forced to adapt in most of his great fights with the 1st Duran fight an exception.Comment

if pryor was a welterweight...then yeah it would be him...but SRR easily...lenard or hernes second...
but i'll say this about mayweather...if he ends up beating pac...jmm...cotto...mosley...clottey...basically any 3 of the guys listed...he deserves the right to be in these talks...i already believe that he's one of the smartest fighters to ever touch the ring...Comment

Too fast, too aggressive, too heavy handed, and just plain too tough. Laying on the ropes and slipping like Floyd does would've done nothing but get his ass beaten bloody and KO'd quick.
[EDIT]
Having said that, I think that if Floyd were to be more aggressive in his fights, and actually decide to FIGHT until the end of his career, he could easily place himself in the top 5, maybe even within the top 3. He has the talent, just doesn't bother doing much with it, just prefers to sit back and brag about it.
He'll never be #1, however, at least in my opinion. He'd have to beat the living **** out of every top welter in the division for that to happen, and he's just too selective about who he fights to accomplish that.Last edited by Stickman; 08-02-2009, 10:30 AM.Comment
