New School Pick Of The Week: Charles Huerta

By Jake Donovan - In an era where more superstars are on the way out than entering the game, the search is always on for “the next so-and-so.” With Oscar de la Hoya freshly retired after a career spent as the highest grossing athlete in the history of the sport, his name is the one most often preceded by “the next.”

Naturally, Mexican-Americans from the left coast will garner the first look, particularly those fighting under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. As if the bar isn’t set high enough for the sport’s next generation to live up to, those actually promoted by the future Hall-of-Famer now have to satisfy an even higher standard. [details]

lol I saw that **** comin with Huerta. That kid was winging those quick ass hooks and the first thing that ran through my mind was that he's gonna catch Huerta standing straight up, but it looked like he caught him with a counter. Either way, if Huerta was experienced enough, he would have identified that kids intentions and just started pumpin that jab in-between, or after those hooks, and just let that kid punch himself out for the round. But nah, lol he tried to hook with a kid that was puttin everything he had behind his own hooks, and ended up getting countered. And the ref didn't stop the fight, Huerta just got counted out on his knee. I don't think Huerta heard, or was even aware the ref was already at the count of 9..

Now I thought Molina fought a better fight than Ramos did, technically. Ramos was head hunting a little bit after the first couple rounds and looked like he was on the verge of gassin himself out, which isn't that big of a deal since it was only 6 round fight. But that first jab he threw in the last round already lost it's steam. Molina on the other hand, he only throws when he knows he can land, and that Colombian kid had that awkward upper body movement. So instead of goin wild, Molina was pickin his guy off slowly, finding his timing. It was just a matter of time before he started finding his openings and getting more accurate, which he was able to do. And I know he got the stoppage, but he looked a little sloppy in that last round.

With the exception of Huerta who just got blitzed, I wonder if these kids got pressure on em to push for the knockout cause they're already on TV. If that's the case, I don't think they'll learn to pace themselves and utilized to their defenses. Anyways, Ramos officially reminds me of the Marquez brothers. He's a natural with the lead uppercut and the uppercuts in general, keeps his chin tucked, and he's got decent hand speed. Better head movement and defense and he could be somthing serious.

I'm not sure about tonight, but I do recall reading that the last Golden Boy Club or whatever it's called they all got bonuses for KO's. I assume the same for tonight as well. Maybe Oscar might want to rethink that strategy, then again maybe not (makes for great TV).

I think tonight was perfect example, Ramos and Molina went a little wild in the later part of their fights. But at the end of the day, its up to the fighters to stay smart, Tv or no Tv. And at the same time I'm sure they know what the **** they're doin. But Ramos came out smart, goin to the body and head, but when that wasn't gettin the results he wanted after those early knockdowns, and after he got tagged a few times, it looked like he started goin wild. And I thought Molina was fighting perfect given that awkward upper body movement that Colombian dude was giving him. If he had to fight more rounds in his fight, he would have just started getting even more accurate and devastating.

I'm not surprised that Huerta lost, I read Doug Fischer's column on ringtv and he described Wilson's style, it seemed to be the type of style that Huerta has the most trouble with. I just expected Wilson to win by decision instead of knockout.

I think it was the fighter of the night that got "voted" for the best performance that got a bonus.

That's way too much pressure. You have young prospects trying to make a name for themselves, add national tv, and a potential performance bonus, and that's even more on their shoulders, but I guess if they're looking for the next real deal that can handle the pressure it's a good way to weed people out.

I never heard of Wilson, lol but just seein those first hooks he threw, you didn't need to know much about him. They were so short and fast that you could tell if they landed, somthin was gonna happen.
