Yes, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get into your best shape/fighting shape.
There have been many big guys that could have weighed more in a fight if they hadn't set aside a number to get down to for their fighting weight.
Even with a weight-limit, we've seen guys blow up in weight and have to come down and appear in shape but have hurt themselves in training with the weight-loss which is also why it is better to stay active in the gym. Klitschkos for instance stay in shape year round instead of allowing their body to go up to high and then have to drop in back down in weight.Comment

Think Tunney, think.
The "elite" are the minority which is why you have a few hundred playing in the NFL, a few hundred playing in the MLB, and a few hundred playing in the NBA...and only a certain amount have the ability to be "starters." Compare the amount that are able to make it to the population size. Lots of factors involved.
Boxing gyms are rare today compared to back in the day. There is greater opportunity in the other sports than boxing in the USA. At least if you don't make it Pro, you can still have the ability to get a scholarship to college which gives you an education to get a good job (if you can find one).
Parents as well as the athlete would find this more lucrative.
Same reason why you had a lot of ***ish, Italian, and Irish fighters pre-WWII compared to after.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 07-27-2009, 04:11 PM.Comment

Why can't you rise above the bull****, stop the excuses and admit the Klitschkos are great fighters? There seems to be some ****** protocol in your mind that's holding you back from being fair. The "elite" are the minority which is why you have a few hundred playing in the NFL, a few hundred playing in the MLB, and a few hundred playing in the NBA...and only a certain amount have the ability to be "starters." One REAL reason is that many American heavyweights never reach their potential because of their unwillingness to get into top shape.Last edited by The Hammer; 07-27-2009, 05:07 PM.Comment

WTF are you talking about? Why can't you rise above the bull****, stop the excuses and admit the Klitschkos are great fighters? There seems to be some ****** protocol in your mind that's holding you back from being fair.

What does that have to do with the Klitschkos?
American HWs suck today...bottom line. Even if they got into their best shape, they aren't good anyway. The fact that they can't get in shape says it all about them.
There athletic ability isn't good, technical skills are not that good, and of course the big thing is Mentally, they are not the same...which again, goes with the "Elite" aspect to things. None are Phenoms either like we've had in the past.
At least fighters in the past that were good-great were able to get themselves in shape at one piont in time and keep it there for a certain time period. Hell, 3 years would be nice.
These American HWs today aren't the same as yesterday. The 90's were the last breed of American HW elites.
Even Buster Douglas who had ups and downs with his weight (as well as Bowe), at least studied the technical side to the sport which is why when they did get into shape, they could put on a show.
It's why James Toney and Larry Holmes could fight past their prime and when they were over-weight (compared to their best).
If you don't prepare yourself both Mentally and Physically, don't learn the technical side to the sport and keep training at it...you will not be at your best.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 07-27-2009, 05:24 PM.Comment

It does seem like more of the Heavies are out of shape these days. Could part of it be that some of these guys are more natural Cruisers who feel that they need that extra weight to compete with the top natural heavies in terms of strength? I know it doesn't account for guys like Sam Peter but maybe the likes of Chambers and Povetkin.Comment
