I'm taking credit for this one Woodside, even though you thought of it first.

    A couple more contenders;

De La Hoya / Trinidad - Massive fight for Puerto Rico - Mexico Rivalry
Holmes / Cooney - The Great White Hope versus the professional

Ruiz/Valuev 3 will of course top all of these though.

        how about holmes-ali?

because of that fight......larry holmes never got a fair shake with boxing historians.

though that definitely is changing with the old ali era writers croaking.

I think Holmes-Cooney would be more fitting.

Most of all I mentioned have historical signifincance.

Beat you to it. It could be a good top 10 candidate.

Molineaux/Cribb is one of the more entertaining boxing stories I know of. There's cheating.. also if I'm not mistaken, in the rematch. Cribb is said to have gone through what would now be considered one of the first "training camps." A legitimate preparation for a particular fight. Unfortunately, Molineaux's preparation consisted of eating and booze.

No i know, absolutely.. I'm just pointing out that is really the only qualifier for this particular list. I've seen a couple best fights ever lists. Dan Rafael did one once. I'm surprised Ring doesn't have a top 10 most important fights.

cooney was a good win and a good fighter.

cooney being degraded just to degrade larry's accomplishment was spiteful.

cooney beat norton , lyle and young to get that title shot.

yes they were old but that's what contenders are suppose to do to get a title shot. beat the old names to get recognition.

Amen to that. Anyone who hasn't read about that fight needs to.

People walked from miles away into the woods because boxing had been deemed illegal I believe. Thousands of people met to watch a 30 plus round championship fight, unbelievable.

The second fight, I believe Molineaux was basically treated unfairly throughout and the fight was basically rigged. I want to say he was hit by some bystanders or something, but I can't remember for sure.

Yeah Molineaux seemed to be boxing's first bad ass. Calling out fighters, drinking, partying, etc..
