HE MAY BE THE SMALLER AND LIGHTER fighter, but Manny Pacquiao will still be the bettors’ choice when he tangles with Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Just a day after the bout was sealed at a catch weight of 145 pounds, Skybet.com listed the pound-for-pound king Pacquiao as an early 2-1 favorite to wrest Cotto’s World Boxing Organization welterweight crown.
Never mind that Pacquiao will be waging war at over 140 lb for only the second time in his sterling career and that Cotto, a natural at 147 lb, has beaten the likes of Shane Mosley and Zab Judah.
At his heaviest, Pacquiao tipped the scales at 148 lb against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, while Cotto normally exceeds 155 lb at fight night.
The 28-year-old Cotto, who has a huge fan base of fellow Puerto Ricans, owns a better fight record (33 wins, 1 loss to Pacquiao’s 49 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws) and knockout percentage (79.41 to 68.52 percent).
But the 30-year-old Pacquiao’s successive demolition of David Diaz in nine rounds at 135 lb, De La Hoya in eight rounds at 147 and Hatton in two rounds at 140 proved enough to sway the balance in his favor over Cotto.
In his ************.com report on Tuesday, analyst Giancarlo Malinconico said he wasn’t surprised that Pacquiao emerged the 2-1 favorite over Cotto, as he was against Hatton.
Malinconico pointed out that Pacquiao, based on his last three wins, is faster, throws power punches in bunches and has improved his footwork and defense.
The Pacquiao-Cotto showdown was formally finalized on Monday in Los Angeles (Tuesday in Manila), according to Top Rank honcho and fight promoter Bob Arum, after Pacquiao agreed to the catch weight of 145 lb.
Pacquiao will get the bigger share in total purse and pay-per-view sales, Arum said.
