EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: DEVON ALEXANDER
By G. Leon
GL: How is everything going in preparation for the August 1st Junior Witter WBC title fight on Showtime?
Devon Alexander: "Perfect. I'm getting up every morning and running six miles. I'm going to the gym for 3 hours a day and sparring twelve rounds. I'm working hard and I'm going to be ready."
GL: What do you think about Witter as a fighter and what weaknesses do you see in him that you feel you'll be able to avoid come fight night?
Devon Alexander: "I saw a couple of fights on him. I saw him with Zab and how he changed. In the past he was running a lot and now he doesn't run as much as he used to. He's a good fighter and he's awkward, but I'm going to be prepared for everything and I'm going for the gusto. This is what I've been waiting on my whole life."
GL: What does becoming champion mean to you?
DA: "It means a lot. In my first interview I ever did I was eight years old. There was a picture of somebody wearing the WBC belt and I was saying that I'm going to become champion and I want the green belt. So this is just going to be a dream come true for me."
GL: Some people look as Witter as too much too soon for you. What do you say to them?
DA: "I love it. I guess people have a lot of doubts because of the Victor Ortiz thing and a lot of young fighters have been losing, but I been bred for this my whole life. I've been fighting guys bigger than me and I've been fighting with Cory Spinks my whole life. He brings nothing new. I love that the odds is 3-1 because they're overlooking me. I'm young and they're trying to hold that against me, but I'm going for the gusto baby."
GL: Who do you like in the main event, Nate Campbell or Timothy Bradley?
DA: "I don't know. Timothy Bradley is young and hungry. I think Nate Campbell has more power than Bradley so he can hurt him if he catches him, but Bradley's youth and activity might come into play too. It should be a good fight."
GL: Are you hoping an August 1st victory leads to you fighting the Bradley-Campbell winner next?
DA: "I don't know. Right now I'm focused on getting that green belt, once I have it, I'm going to be ready for anybody they want to throw at me. I'm just looking to capture this belt on August 1 and look forward to seeing what we have next."
GL: Do you have a prediction other than victory?
DA: "I'm going to pound on him until he quits or I'm going to pound on him until the final bell. It's going down one of them two ways. If he can take it, I'll be right there giving it to him."
GL: Closing thoughts?
DA: "********** has been following me from before I turned pro and here I am 18-0 as a pro about to be fighting for a world title. I told them to stay tuned to the Great and you're going to see Great things, from a Great champion for a long time."
