  • Weekend Preview: And Why Results Don’t Matter

By Jake Donovan - You know that myth about how a fighter is written off after just one loss?

Ask Amir Khan if there’s any truth to it.

Ten months after being mistaken for a ring apron logo, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist prepares for his first crack at a major alphabet title when he faces junior welterweight titlist Andriy Kotelnik.

The fight takes place this Saturday at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. That would be the same M.E.N. Arena where promoter Frank Warren hopes to turn him into the building’s next house fighter, as he now plays the building for the third time in ten months. [details]

What exactly is Jake Donovan trying to say?

Of course tommorow nights result matters. If Khan wins he would have beaten a world class opponent in a high risk fight. People need to forget that it is for a world title, and remember that it's an intriguing fight between a talented, but vulnerable prospect, and an experienced, but underrated world champion. It's a worthy and credible fight. If Khan loses, his trip to the top level of boxing is over and the majority of boxing fans will have their wish come true. But if he wins, Khan will announce his arrival on the world stage and look towards bigger fights. Let's not forget that Kotelnik also profits from a win tommorow night. He will already be making a career high payday, and if he manages to beat Khan, he will get the headlines and notoriety he craves. Possibly setting up fights with the Bradley - Campbell winner, a rematch with Maidana on U.S television, or even a big fight with Ricky Hatton.

Both boxers have much to lose, and much to gain. I'm very excited.

im looking forward to this 1 aswell, and the result does matter. im not sure kotelnik is world class, but he is probably under rated.

the original headline would've provided a greater clue:

Khan, Prescott And Why Results Don't Matter

That said, I thought I discussed Khan getting knocked out by Prescott a year ago, yet now fighting for a major title while Prescott is still toiling on the ESPN2 circuit.

Khan was destined for a title shot, and a knockout loss hardly served as a speed bump.

Meanwhile, Prescott's lottery ticket has all but expired.

I'm pretty sure that's what I meant by "the results don't matter."

To be fair boxing has always been like that. In this game, you only get what you negotiate. Khan is a big star in Britian and a PPV attraction. While he may not deserve a title shot, he has got one and that is that.

Also, I don't think the title is important. The man named Kotelnik holding the belt is a much bigger prize for Khan. If he manages to win, he would have beaten a very good, skilled fighter, who is very underrated in boxing circles. The world title is just an extra token.

So while Prescott might feel hard done by, when he is fighting on EPSN, and Khan is fighting for world titles, he shouldn't mind too much. If Khan beats Kotelnik, and then beats Hatton, the boxing community is going to demand a rematch between Khan and Prescott somewhere along the line. Even if Prescott loses his next five fights the fight with Khan will still be on the cards. Prescott should hope Khan wins his next few fights and becomes a world boxing star, because if he does, Prescott will only benefit.

Khan vs Prescott 2 = Huge money

              Good read.

My biggest issue with the game of boxing, is exactly what is pointed out in the article: Critics are so quick to throw a fighter to the wolves as soon as he lose, as soon as he is knocked out, or makes a mistake. A fighter falls, a champion gets up. It's just how it works.

I'm excited to see Erislandy Lara once again.

ok good as long as you are feeding your stomach. although Amir makes more in one fight than most would in their lifetime. But where did you go for school? honestly, and I am saying this with no disrespect, but where did you learn how to write articles?

I am saying all of this because these 2 fighters do matter and they matter a lot. Just go to England and check out for yourself how huge Amir Khan is there. Boxing needs him, plain and simple. Boxing needs a kid superstar. When was the last time you saw one? Mike Tyson?

Freddie Roach has said numerous times that Amir is faster than Manny Pacquiao. What does that tell you about Amir?

The fact that Amir is still a huge draw in England pretty much makes my point - that for the moment, the kid is still bullet proof.

I wasn't trying to hate on him at all, and will openly admit that I did a very poor job of conveying that point if my article came across any other way. I like Khan, and have always been a fan.

I just found it interesting that ten months after their head to head meeting, Khan and Prescott are now fighting on the same exact weekend.

Khan - the knockout victim in that fight - has rebuilt to where his career hasn't missed a beat, to where he's now preparing for the biggest fight as a pro to date.

On the very same weekend, Prescott - the knockout winner - is still no further along than he was prior to the Khan fight.

That's honestly the only point I was making.

And I went to St. John's, to answer your question - back when they were still the Redmen (though on the verge of changing to the corny ass Red Storm). I was a year behind Malik Sealy, R.I.P., and three behind Jayson Williams - who, to put it nicely, was the exact opposite of the always classy Malik.
