Daniel Jacobs vs Ishe Smith in The Works For 8/22

BoxingScene.com was advised that hot middleweight prospect Daniel Jacobs (17-0, 15KOs) is going to face his biggest test to date, veteran Ishe Smith (21-3, 9KOs), in the August 22 co-feature position to Paulie Malignaggi vs. Juan Diaz at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. HBO will televise both fights. [details]

Nice step for Jacobs but I wish he was fighting a real middleweight. It is typical though for a young prospect to fight safer fights against names that come up a weight class and had no pop in the class they were in. Keep in mind that Smith couldn't **** at 147 or 154, his power will be even less at 160. His only chance is to put a boxing lesson on DJ. Could happen but probably not. He does have a good beard though so maybe if he can split a few rounds early and pull away late. Could happen

He is getting on HBO as a B side opponent. That is not really, "Getting on HBO". Big difference. Although I think he could possibly win the fight by decision. He would have to win 8 rounds or so by a wide margin to win a decision on that card. Gomez can't afford another slip up.

I respect Ishe Smith. I don't think he can fight at 160 pounds and be competitive.
Just before Peter Manfredo Jr. signed with TKO, I had heard Jacobs and Manfredo would battle on 8/22.

                Crap, I thought HBO's co-feature was Klassen/Guerrero. Oh well.

This is a fair test for Jacobs, but his stock is not likely to rise if he beats Smith.

It is. The article was updated because the show is a triple header.
