Shane Molsey: "Nobody is going the distance with me!"
I understand you made some remarks about possibly fighting Kermit Cintron. I spoke with Ronnie Shields his trainer and he confirmed it, what can you tell us about the possibility of fighting Cintron? "Actually I never said anything about Cintron, so I don't know where they got that from."
So what's next for Shane Mosley and when can expect you back in the ring?
Shane Mosley: "There's been some talks about Berto and a fight with him. Now Pacquiao is spitting my name out so maybe he wants to get in the ring with me too. If Pacquiao's ready and he doesn't want to fight Cotto and he wants to fight me. All he has to do is tell his promoter to contact Richard Schaeffer and we can get this party started."
Do you realistically that they're going to put Berto in the same ring with you at this point?
SM: "They've been talking about it. I don't think it's a good idea for him, but Berto is a world champion."
What did you think about Victor Ortiz quitting?
SM: "I think he's young and he was confused. The bright lights and the big stage got to him. I can't really say much else about it, but that probably won't happen again."
You haven't fought since January and haven't been to camp since 2008. By the time you get into the ring will you be concerned about ring rust at all?
SM: "Nah, I think I'll be all right. I've been keeping myself in shape, so I don't think it'll be a problem."
Oscar told me he thinks Pacquiao would stop Cotto easily. Do you feel the same way?
SM: "It would be an interesting fight, but I probably lean towards Pacquiao too."
What did you think about Cotto-Clottey?
SM: "I think Clottey might have edged him out in that fight. Cotto is still a great fighter. He's strong, but he looked a little rusty."
Watching that fight did you think Clottey had it easy and then let him off the hook down the stretch?
SM: "I got that impression watching that fight, but that's usually what Clottey does. He did the same thing at the end with Margarito, but I still think Clottey did enough to win the fight by a small margin."
Do you have any interest to fight Kermit Cintron?
SM: "I can't really say I do. Is he a champion?"
Nope.
SM: "I can't see myself fighting him then because he's got nothing to offer."
: Ronnie Shields, who trained Vernon Forrest during his victories over you feels that you're the same fighter and he would be able to achieve the same success against you through Cintron. Your thoughts?
SM: "He could think what he wants, but I'm not the same fighter. When his fighter has something to offer then we can talk about him. At least Berto has a title."
Would you be disappointed if your next fight was anybody other than Cotto, Pacquiao or Mayweather?
"I would be disappointed because I want the biggest fights against the best, but I don't want to grow old waiting."
Do you think Golden Boy could have done more to force Mayweather into a fight with you instead of making the Marquez fight?
SM: "The whole world knows I'm the best welterweight out there and they can all fight around me, but they're going to have to see me. Marquez is a great fighter and I admire his skills and his talent and I'm not trying to knock him, but I think me and Mayweather is a bigger fight, I think I'm the best welterweight out there right now and I don't think anybody could beat me."
Vernon Forrest also mentioned fighting you again in the near future. Does that interest you at all?
SM: "Anything is possible, but I don't think it'll be the near future. I have a few others I'm looking to line up first."
Do you like Mayweather over Marquez?
SM: "If I was a betting man, I'd favor Mayweather. Marquez showed that he's strong moving up and he gave Pacquiao very tough fights. He stopped Casamayor and Diaz and he's got power, so we'll see what happens. He definitely has a chance."
Does Pacquiao last twelve rounds with Shane Mosley?
SM: "It's hard for me to say. I'm looking to end all of my fights early, so I don't think anybody will last twelve rounds with me from here on out."
What's the earliest we could expect you back in the ring?
SM: "I believe it will be sometime this fall, hopefully against Manny Pacquiao. If not we'll fight Berto or somebody. I think Pacquiao's team was trying to force him to fight Cotto, but he knows it doesn't make sense."
Closing thoughts?
SM: "I want to thank all of my fans for their support. I will be ready to perform at my best next time you see me."
