      Breland won five consecutive New York Golden Gloves Championships (1980-1984). His record in the New York Golden Gloves was 21-0 with 19 knockouts, 14 in the first round.
      Lost to Darryl Anthony by a 3-2 decision at the 1981 United States Amateur Championships in the welterweight division. This was Breland's only loss as an amateur. He avenged the loss in his eleventh professional fight, winning by a third-round knockout.
      1981 Intercity Golden Gloves Welterweight Champion. Breland scored a first-round knockout of Efrain Bennett in the final.
      1982 United States Amateur Welterweight Champion
      1982 World Amateur Welterweight Champion in Munich, West Germany.
      1983 United States Amateur Welterweight Champion. Results were:
      Defeated Bill Harrington TKO 3
      Defeated Tony Golden TKO 2
      Defeated Alton Rice on points
      Defeated James Mitchell TKO 2

      1984 Los Angeles Olympics1984 U.S. Olympic Trials Welterweight Champion in Fort Worth, Texas. Results were:
      Defeated Louis Howard on points
      Defeated Mylon Watkins TKO 1
      Defeated David Gutierrez on points
      Defeated Louis Howard on points at the Olympic Box-Offs in Las Vegas.
      Welterweight Gold Medalist at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Results were:
      Defeated Wayne Gordon (Canada) 5-0
      Defeated Carlos Reyes (Puerto Rico) TKO 3
      Defeated Rudel Obreja (Romania) 5-0
      Defeated Genaro Leon (Mexico) KO 1
