    P4P: ALI, SRR and Mayweather

I was watching literally hours of boxing yesterday wit my boys...and the debate came up.

As P4P goes, im gonna say it. Mayweather has as much, if not more boxing skill than ALI. But SRR is still ultimately the P4P king. I don't think there's much debate for that.

Prime Mayweather and Young "Cassius Clay" of the 60's is the basis for comparison. The way ALI as a kid moved was fcukin stoopid doo doo dumb, and the way Mayweather boxes is so fcukin scientific he's like a super fighter in there.

We were talking strictly from a conventional boxing standpoint. Timing, counters, footwork, head movement, defense, punching, stamina, endurance, focus, counter punching...they both got that and then some. Even though they execute their skills quite differently, i just think the boxing skill level between the two is parallel; or damn near close.

I'm an ALI fan since childhood (OG 80s baby), and i am NOT a Mayweather fan. But when i watch Mayweather box, it's fcukin amazing. Watching ALI box is like watching an Opera; watching Mayweather box is like watching a musical on Broadway. They're both artists...personally i don't think Mayweather is a boring fighter. He's not necessarily an exciting fighter either, but i enjoy watching him.

But watching SRR? That's fcukin crazy...i've been tellin people about SRR for days!!

Roy Jones might be better than all of them

Ray Robinson was a monster though, his power was ****ing nuts and he's probably the best combination puncher ever, he might have the nicest footwork ever as well along with Ali

having much more skill or talent in this sport is almost meaningless kimosave...

this sport is not gymnastics or diving...

the only thing that matters ultimately is the level of opposition that certain boxer faced...

the circumstances his fight occured then his longevity...

          Yeah........
Ali's never been thought of as a good technical boxer,he wasn't.
Floyd is far better than him in these regards but a lot of others have been as good as Floyd but didn't have the record that he does so they are overlooked.
It all comes down to W's [with names] in the end for most people.

agreed that the likes of ali, mayweather, SRR and RJJ are in a league of their own if you were to put them in their respective primes.

i think mayweather may have more skills than ali, but ali had a natural warrior apirit in him, he sought out big challenges consistently.

although mayweather did that early on in his career he doesn't do it anymore. its a shame as well because i think he could defeat pacman, mosley, berto, clottey and cotto but in the end its up to him if he wants to get in the ring with them.

i think while Floyd may be more technically proficient and "scientific" as you put it, he isn't quite the overall boxer Ali was. textbook is not the be all and end all

Floyd is in the top 10 most skilled fighters ever though, in my opinion

Ali was not a great boxer from a technical standpoint, but in his prime his speed and reflexes as a heavyweight are unmatched even today.

If we are talking from a pure talent standpoint, Roy Jones Jr. may be the best ever. As we all know though, that talent doesn't last forever and you have to have the heart, chin, an ability to adapt like Ali did.

no question...SRR was the greatest...but i think it needs to be broken down in eras...joe louis was great before SRR came...ali was great at the end of SRR's reign...tyson was great in the 80's...floyd was great in the late 90's and early to mid 2000's...roy jones around the same time or a little before...
