McGuigan Picking Cleverly To Get Past McIntosh Scrap

Barry McGuigan has told the Daily Mirror that Nathan Cleverly, 22, can be the next big thing in British boxing. Cleverly fights Danny McIntosh, 29, at the York Hall this Saturday, with the British light-heavyweight title on the line, although both men are unbeaten, McGuigan feels that Cleverly is the fighter destined for the top. Cleverly is overrated.

    But he'll still beat McIntosh.

whats so overrated about him Demise?

i think hes a good fighter, who is right now a good solid domestic level fighter with the potential to go all the way and challenge for world titles. hes growing into a genuine 175lber and i can see him challeneging the best LHW's within 2/3 years.

hes got very good ring smarts for a lad whos so young, this probably comes with his lack of power which has forced him to develop good ring generalship. hes got every punch in the book and knows when to throw the right shots at the right times, he can fight at a high pace, take a shot and was very highly rated by calzaghe.

critics once upon time did critique his lack of power but he is still phsiycally growing and it seems as though so is his power.

Like you said, his lack of power.

His fight with Billy Boyle didn't show his skills off at all, is there a fight you'd recommend to show the best of Cleverly?

he could be world champion. Not saying he's a great fighter, but in 2 years time unless a few SMWs move up the LHW division is gonna be 10x worse than it is now. And thats saying quite a lot.

i think his fight with toney oakey is when he showed his skills

toney oakeys a good fighter who i think won the prize fighter comp and is a pretty good LHW himself.

in the fight cleverly's quality shone through he landed the cleaner blows, had a great right uppercut and showed timing and composure to execute his game plan.

in his last few fights hes KO'd a few more people and again his right uppercut has proven to be a lethal punch. in his last fight he KO'd the guy with body shots and seem to be improving every time he gets in the ring.
