It appears that the legal battle between Evander Holyfield and the New York State Athletic Commission may not happen as expected. To bring anyone that this new to the stituation up to speed, Evander Holyfield was medically suspended by the NYSAC following Saturday night's pay per view battle against Larry Donald. The NYSAC felt that Evander did so poorly in his bout against Larry Donald, a fighter who most experts regard as a journeyman, that he should not be fighting unless he goes through a medical evaluation.
"Evander Holyfield has absorbed enough punishment throughout his great career. It's time the bleeding stopped." said NYSAC chairman Ron Stevens after the bout.
The suspension by the NYSAC will prevent Evender Holyfield from fighting anywhere in the United States. The ban has brought on both cheers and criticism from Boxing fans all over the world. On one hand, there are Boxing fans that feel the NYSAC commission did the right thing and Holyfield should have retired 5 fights ago. On the other hand, there are Boxing Fans who feel that it should be up to Evander Holyfield to make a decision regarding when and how he walks away from the sport.
Many say that if Holyfield is medically suspended and kept from fighting, why are guys like Rid**** Bowe, Tony Tubbs, Bruce Seldon and Michael Moorer allowed to fight? Evander Holyfield is in better shape then all of these guys put together. Guys like Moorer and Seldon have been beaten to a pulp in the past and are still permitted to fight. There was an entire HBO special on how Bowe may be suffering brain damage from too many shots to the head, Bowe himself admitted that he was suffering the effects of ring punishment at his Trial for kidnapping his family. Meldrick Taylor was allowed to fight to the point where he can barely get his words out. It took a vicious car accident to get Roberto Duran to retire or else he would have been allowed to fight until he was 102! The point is, Holyfield should be the last person singled out by the NYSAC as being unfit to fight.
I personally hope that Evander never fights again, but it should be his decision to do so. Holyfield is already sinking to the point of forced retirement on his own. We just saw Holyfield, primarily a pay per view main eventer, become the opening act on Saturday's card to fighters like Ruiz, Golota, Meehan and Rahman. It is to the point where no network will want to showcase his fights and there is no money in matching him against anyone. Trust me when I tell you, the minute Don King can't get Holyfield any decent money for a fight on televised TV, Evander will walk away. Don't let that "I want to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world" catchphrase fool you. Evander loves money just as much as the next guy and if he will NOT fight for peanuts in non-televised bouts. [details]
