Or is it just one of those things you have or you don't? I've heard fighters with thicker necks tend to have better chins so neck work outs would actually help a little.

You can improve your defense. But if you ain't born wit a chin you don't get one.

Pure genetics. Nothing changes how hard a punch you can take.

train the neck with weights - the neck acts as the shock absorber which is why fighters like tua and tyson with thick necks are able to take shots.

conditioning the legs, some chinny fighters get hit and their legs go from underneath the, having extra mass here would give you a stronger base.

theres also a special type of chin press up which tim bradley and margarito sometimes do. Lie on the floor with chin on the floor and a towel tucked underneath then lifts his body weight up placing the weight on the chin.

of course these are all physical improvements and their imporvements are likely to be marginal, in some cases the problems can be sorted out through technique. i.e learn better defense, how to slip and roll with punches etc.

I beg to differ with all of you. If you dont box and compete then dont post

              Yes you can.

the ability to take a punch can be affected greatly by a completely condition and strong body. If you prepare your body to go through hell and back you most definitely will.

Its all about how hard you train. Granted some people can take shots better than others but at peak performance its a lot harder to be put down.

I would also add that if you compete at a comfortable weight you shouldnt have as much of a problem. the loss of muscle can greatly affect your ability to take shots.

neck exercises improve your ability to take a punch alot. experience too, being comftorable and calm enough to spin of punches and take the steam away rather than absorbing the full blow. takes ring time. also improve cardio, just cuz u are in shape doesnt mean u wont get buzzed. but it shortens your recovery time drasticly. the best way to make sure u dont get knocked the hell out is defense though.

it's not the loss of muscle that weakens your ability to take punches but, it's the loss of the fluid that surrounds/cushions your brain(this is due to cutting and excessive amount of weight) that causes you to be more susceptible to getting rocked.
