Joseph Agbeko-Vic Darchinyan: The Pre-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - He’s got a chip on his shoulder, talks smack like few others…

    …and he’s got balls.

In other words, he backs his smack and to entertaining effect. Vic Darchinyan, the World Junior Bantamweight champion, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but probably should be. Being a little guy in the modern U.S. market is a tough business and yet Darchinyan has made it profitable. Regular Showtime appearances gave him a cult following through to a Flyweight title loss to Nonito Donaire in 2007 which many saw as the beginning of the end.

After all, Darchinyan wasn’t a young man and the smaller classes are unforgiving to age. Darchinyan defied those traditions with a career year in 2008 which ended with his becoming the first man to hold the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles at 115 lbs. He’s continued his dominance in 2009, wrecking longtime rival Jorge Arce to begin the year.

This weekend may be his stiffest test yet.

Making his serious debut in a third weight class, Darchinyan will tussle with Ghana’s Joseph Agbeko, a fighter who has been inactive for much of his almost two-year title reign but shown enough promise to intrigue. It is Agbeko whose title is on the line as Darchinyan attempts to join the small circle of fighters who have ever won major titles in three weight classes. Both men are coming off of some serious crowd pleasers and for hardcore fight fans this is as red meat as it gets. [details]

I can't tell who's gonna win this bout. But I want Vic to win. There are rumors going around here in Japan that Darchinyan is willing to fight Hasegawa for the batamweight unification should he beat Agbeko. The fast and highly skilled Japanese ACE boxer versus Armenian Raging Bull is a Dream Match in a lower weight division.

That would be a crazy match. Let's hope it happens. I think Vic should beat Agbeko, but he is a huge underdog and has a great chance at upsetting Vic. As long as Vic fights like he did against Mijares, that is fight smart, use his speed, angles and skill, he should take a win home. On the other hand, if he gets wild and starts trying to just go nuts he could be in for a long night because Agbeko can hurt you with his power. He is a very strong fighter.

          Let's just hope it's a good fight.

Vic is the best thing for the lower weight classes...and its not even close. In a day and age where boxing nitpick and make excuses for not wanting to fight other fighters, Vic is going out and chasing big time fights. For him to go after Hasegawa if he wins doesnt suprise me. If he can keep it going, He will fight Hasegawa then montiel, then go up to 122 and face someone like cabellero or Lopez. In reality Vic is really chasing Izzy for a 122 bout which would be a crazy fight if it goes down in a year or two.

vic is one of the best in bw and below but i dont think he is the best. he has to beat donaire for me to agree to that. its true that vic has beaten quality fighters after the loss, but i do think donaire would be able to do it as well

i would favor vic over hasegawa thou, i feel like vic is more experience and skilled between the two. his confidence and conviction to be the best in the world is scary, actually more scary than his talent in the ring

but i wouldn't count out hasegawa, the guy is gifted in the speed department and is very athletic... speed kills

Hasegawa>>>donaire in every department. Donaire is the easier fight outta the two. If either fight goes down I'm dropping big points on a win for Vic.
