By Cliff Rold - He’s got a chip on his shoulder, talks smack like few others…
…and he’s got balls.
In other words, he backs his smack and to entertaining effect. Vic Darchinyan, the World Junior Bantamweight champion, isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but probably should be. Being a little guy in the modern U.S. market is a tough business and yet Darchinyan has made it profitable. Regular Showtime appearances gave him a cult following through to a Flyweight title loss to Nonito Donaire in 2007 which many saw as the beginning of the end.
After all, Darchinyan wasn’t a young man and the smaller classes are unforgiving to age. Darchinyan defied those traditions with a career year in 2008 which ended with his becoming the first man to hold the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles at 115 lbs. He’s continued his dominance in 2009, wrecking longtime rival Jorge Arce to begin the year.
This weekend may be his stiffest test yet.
Making his serious debut in a third weight class, Darchinyan will tussle with Ghana’s Joseph Agbeko, a fighter who has been inactive for much of his almost two-year title reign but shown enough promise to intrigue. It is Agbeko whose title is on the line as Darchinyan attempts to join the small circle of fighters who have ever won major titles in three weight classes. Both men are coming off of some serious crowd pleasers and for hardcore fight fans this is as red meat as it gets. [details]
