Ricardo Mayorga anounced this week, that for his fight scheduled the 14th of may against Spaniard Javier Castillejo, he wont have Rigoberto Garibaldi as his trainer.
The former welterweight champion has decided to work with his brother in-law Luis Leon and his uncle Omar Perez.
However Alexis Arguello believes that Mayorga needs to re-dedicate himself, define his style, and stick to discipline so that he doesnt face the problems that he saw before his fight on october against Puerto Rican Felix Tito Trinidad.
"Whichever trainer Mayorga has needs to force him to work hard, run one hour and a half in the morning, train 4 hours in the afternoo, show him how to throw the jab, make your opponent miss, and counter to have an advantage", explained Alexis
There is a few schools he can go to, but first he must decide what he wants to do in the ring, a boxer or a brawler. I think Mayorga is a brawler and a Mexican school would be good for him", added the now vice-mayor of Managua.
Alexis insisted that Mayorga needs to develop his potential to ***** like in his 2 victories over Vernon Forrest, who in 2002 was declared as the best fighter in the United States.
He accepter that a Mexican trainer with the experience of Nacho Beristain, maker of champions like Ricardo "El Finito" Lopez and Juan Manuel Marquez could put to use all the potential that Mayorga has.
"Nacho could be one who could recognize and choose a style for him. The problem is that No one has identified what charecteristic of Mayorga's style is more dominant", said Alexis.
But with Mexican trainer Hector Perez, Mayorga looked good against Forrest?
He looked good because he had conditioning and hunger. But he forgot all that. He can only look that good again with his preparation, running, training every day. Thats what he lost, he felt he had money and fame.
He spoke of training two and a half months for Castillejo?
I think he should train 4 months, because he has to deal with something psychological like the knockout loss he suffered against Trinidad. That even though one says its easy to forget really isnt.
How do you feel that Don King is putting him in a title fight against Castillejo?
Don King doesnt care what happens in a fight. He always goes tot the corner of the winner. He never goes with the looser. We dont have to be scientists to see that.
Does Mayorga have the potential to be a champ again?
Yes, if he commits.
