I've always felt 15 rounds is the real championship distance, and while I assume it became shortened to 12 to protect fighters, I was wondering if anyone knew when it was decided to stop 15 round fights.
There are many fights through history that would have turned out different and completely less memorable if 12 rounds instead of 15. Arguello vs. Pryor, Ali vs. Frazier, Louis vs. Conn, Leonard vs. Hearns, all these fights were decided after 12 and memorable because of what happened after that 12th round. So many fights that went 12 could have been completely different if they went the real championship distance. Also, a 15 round fight has a much less chance of ending in a bogus draw as obviously two fighters can't win an equal amount of rounds.
Who else wishes championship fights were still 15 rounds?
