Felix Sturm: The Only Real Contender Pavlik Has Left?

Sturm's recent wins are being pumped up to make him look credible vs. Pavlik /Abraham. In his last four fights, he's beaten two guys barely out of Golden Gloves (Pittman and Sato), Griffin, a mid-level fighter who never should have been rated so highly, and Sylvester, who got his ranking by knocking out the 40-year-old guy who knocked out Sturm. Sturm has talent but it's silly to argue that his stay-at-home safe fights have provided any better competition than what Pavlik and Abraham have been up against. The fact is the division is weaker, maybe weaker than it has ever been. Pavlik beat the best middleweight at the time (Taylor) and hasn't done much since with the title. Abraham and Sturm have made one crummy defense after another, in part because there just isn't any competition and they can make good money beating nobodies in Germany. Sturm turned down every offer to fight Abraham, and Pavlik won't go to Germany to fight Sturm. So until the younger crop of middleweights gets some mileage on them or fighters like Paul Williams move up, Sturm will just keep beating mediocre contenders and amateurs like Pittman and Sato while Abraham and probably Pavlik move up

When a pair, or group, of fighters pull away from the pack in a given weight class, it is rightfully desired to see them draw blood from one another.

It’s not that boxing is short on fights between the best in most weight classes right now. There has been this year, as there is most years, plenty of quality to go around. Still, there are always soft spots. 160 lbs. is one of them right now.

He should fight Sturm just to get another belt. The he should move up and fight Abraham.
