The thing you don't understand is that these boxers go from being mere athletes, often with little formal education, to being at the head of a multimillion dollar enterprise virtually overnight. And while of course they have management staff, they are inherently vulnerable and very much prone to manipulation. Then throw on top tax liabilities and other relevant expenses, the two of which properly should necessitate a team of accountants, and it is really no wonder that these guys get into financial difficulty.

People often say "boxing is a business." However it is more so the case that a boxer's career is a business endeavor. People tend to look at the money these guys bring in without considering the expenditures which they have to make. Factor in the commonality of ineptitude among boxers (and people in general) when it comes to financial management and it really is no wonder so many boxers end up broke.

Half a million dollars in child support for a guy that only sporadically fights is CRAZY, and the ex-wife that sued must be so gutless I can't imagine.
I think you have a point in regards to his potential mindset. It is likely that he became complacent with the large paydays and he likely neglected to consider the future of his finances as a result.

I think he was being ingenuous when he said it's never been about the money. I get the sense that to him fighting is simply what he does and it is the way he pays the bills. As such, sure he's doing it for the money. If he didn't need the money he wouldn't need to fight. I just don't think he sees it quite this way.
