Bring On Wladimir: Chambers Handles Dimitrenko

By Jake Donovan - Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Eddie Chambers is certainly no fool. His last trip to Germany resulted in a disappointing performance and the lone loss of his professional career.

The American heavyweight came fully prepared for his second trip to Deutschland, weighing a near-career low 209 lb. and delivering the best performance of his career. Two knockdowns paved the way for a whitewash of previously unbeaten Alexander Dimitrenko, earning Chambers a future mandatory title shot against heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko.

The bout took place at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

Dimitrenko’s massive height and reach advantages threatened to be an issue early, with the undefeated Ukrainian spending much of the round working behind the jab. Chambers quickly found a workaround, coming through with an uppercut to set up a flurry , by far the best sequence of the round for the visiting American.

Chambers had no problem tacking the role of aggressor, taking the fight to Dimitrenko early in the second. The Philly-based heavyweight once again worked his way inside, at one point wedging his shoulder in Dimitrenko’s midsection, literally lifting him off of the canvas. Much of the round was spent with Chambers on the pursuit, while Dimitrenko far too often threw only one punch at a time.

The instructions from Chambers’ corner in between rounds were to remain on the offensive, noting Dimitrenko’s nose was beginning to redden, and to treat his Rudolph-like presence as a bullseye for his right hand power shots. [details]

      Thank you ****** public.

      Thank you Eddie Chambers.

I should have bet a lot more money, but I'll take the 100 and spend it on beer and liquor for tonight.

Wouldn't mind seein Chambers get his shot. Good performance. He deserves a chance, but he'd lose to Wlad.

Size-wise, I see your point. But your analysis is true only if you compare the two matchups in a vacuum. Wlad is overly tentative, but still has much greater big fight experience and also possesses an equalizer.

What Chambers was able to get away with against Dimitrenko, he'd have to enforce for three minutes of every round for all twelve. Getting cracked by Wlad a few times might change that, as seemingly has been the case with just about everyone else he's fought, at least since the Peter fight.

But if nothing else, Eddie got a good look at how he can fare against the bigger (not necessarily better) fighters of the division. Hell of a starting point on which he can build.

And sadly, as talented as Povetkin might be, I don't see the fight turning out any other way.

I like Povetkin, but quite frankly am not as high on him as is everyone else. He looked good not great against Chambers, and has looked very good but not great really in any other fight of note.

What he has going for him is that that his managers were willing to aggressively move him along early in his career. That said, I haven't seen any great improvement from him as a pro and fear that after such storied amateur career and turning pro at an older age than most prospects, he might've already leveled off.

He should rematch Povetkin before going for Wlad.

Povetkin already has his mandatory title shot with Wladimir guaranteed. He has nothing to gain from a Chambers rematch.
