You didnt follow boxing back then if you think that, he was disliked by alot of people early in his career who didnt like the showboating, his skin color, and a number of things. Many dont realize the many things Ray Leonard did Floyd does today, with how he promotes fights, Ray overblew his eye injury, used every negative the public and writers said about him as promotion, just like Floyd does today, these are well thought out promotional machines behind the cash cows of the business, everything is done to created doubt to get someone to buy or tune in to their fights. Ray fighting Duran in the first fight wasnt seen all that much different than Floyd fighting Marquez albeit Duran had a few fights at welter, Ray made concessions in order to even the fight out to make people think it wasnt as big a mismatch and he happened to lose.

SRL was as loved as DLH. Maybe some oldtimers didn't like his showboat against Duran but that was a one-off. He was always respected for being a real fighter and he always found the toughest opponents. Comparisons to Floyd in this regard makes me laugh.
