    Defence against clinching

From my understanding clinching as a form of strategy is technically illegal, but many boxers these days do it. If the ref isn't willing to do anything what should a fighter do himself to combat his opponents excessive clinching?
In the Hopkins Tarver fight when Tarver pushed Hopkins back the ref said he shouldn't do it? So the question is what can a fighter do to defend himself against clinching?

Straighten your arms out each side to show you are not holding the ref has no option but to separate you.

Seriously, if someone kept clinching against me (Hatton, Berto status)...I'd hit em low. Or do like Mayweather, forearm/ elbow them to the face. Do you, don't always depend on the ref.

                  it's better.

lowblows are too easy to penalize and easier for the ref to deem intentional.

when people are moving their arms to punch or block......"accidental" elbows happen.
