VICTOR ORTIZ SPEAKS ON HIS LOSS TO MAIDANA
By Ryan Burton
Junior welterweight Victor Ortiz spoke with ********** about last week's loss to Marcos Rene Maidana.
**********: I know you are getting bombarded with the same questions so I will try to ask you some different questions. First off what are your thoughts on the fight?
Victor Ortiz: I don't really have any thoughts on the fight besides I completely messed up. I screwed up completely. I don't know what I was trying to prove. I didn't fight like myself and, hey, I paid the consequences.
BT: You tried to slug it out. Did you have a game plan that you didn't stick to or was that the game plan?
VO: You know what the game plan was set for me. I was supposed to box the **** out of this guy and I don't know what happened. My body wasn't responding like I wanted it to. I walked into a straight right and after that I was not myself from there on and I couldn't jump back into my stance so I said, hey you know what, balls out. **** it. Him or me.
BT: Were you surprised that he got up so fast the three times you knocked him down? Do you think the fact he didn't appeared hurt may have affected you?
VO: No I wasn't surprised. I know he is a tough guy. He is a warrior. He came to do what he did and I don't know. I can assure you that I am going to get the rematch and when I do it is going to be a whole different story.
BT: Do you want to fight him next or do you want to get a tune-up or two in first?
VO: I will fight him next. I don't mind. I know that I am more than I showed but it was one of those days.
BT: Lets get off the negative and look to the positive. How did it feel to have all those fans cheering you on?
VO: I really honestly don't know. I mean it was cool but it was big time different. I didn't get to enjoy it with the way things worked out.
BT: I have to ask you what happened with the interview with Max Kellerman after the fight? Were you just frustrated when you said what you said?
VO: The thing is there that I just wanted Max Kellerman off my back because he tends to dig deep into details with what's going on and what happens next. I just figured if I say this, it will shut everybody up and they will leave me alone.
BT: You know what you said didn't sound good.
VO: I said what I said but come on, do you really think I would just quit the sport? Boxing is what I was born to do. Especially on a night like that. I wasn't myself. I wasn't the guy I usually am. People know I have a lot more than what I showed. I showed a really ****** fight and because of my ******ity I paid for it.
BT: You are a young guy with time on your side to bounce back and you did give the fans an exciting fight. That should keep you alive and well on HBO's radar.
VO: (laughing) Oh yeah great for the fans.
BT: Speaking of the fans, do you have a message for them?
VO: Just thank you. Thank you for showing me all the love. I will be back and I will be back stronger.
RB: Thanks for your time and I can't wait to see the rematch.
VO: Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
