    Blog from News Day

Nice to see some random sports writer still has mad love for the sport and great respect. Heres his latest blog:

Random Thoughts: Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Angelo Que, Marcos Maidana and MMA

I never thought I would miss Floyd Mayweather Jr. But I am looking forward to his return to HBO's 24/7. Let's face it, he's often more entertaining on 24/7 than he is in the ring. Floyd's fights are usually one-sided (he usually wins easily) and dull (not a lot of give-and-take). Such is the price he pays for immense talent.

    But wait, there's more ...
Black and Blue. Spent a week at the U.S. Open but with Brian Doogan, Ron Borges and Wally Matthews around, there was plenty of boxing talk. We actually agreed that watching the rain pelt the Black course was more exciting than watching Klitschko Saturday night. (Well, Doogan didn't agree)

I was silently rooting for Angelo Que, the second biggest sports star who hails from Manila, in the Philippines to make the cut. He's no Manny Pacquiao but his gutsy second-round one-under 69 almost helped him qualify for the weekend.Too bad he shot a 77 for the opening round. I watched him par the tough hole 15 (Tiger bogeyed it). The news of the Pacquiao-Cotto fight broke while we were at the Open, which helped pass time during the stoppage of play.

Mixed Martial Arts vs. The Sweet Science. With all due respect to my friends who compete in, cover it and work in the world of MMA, the Marcos Maidana-Victor Ortiz fight on HBO was exactly why MMA will never be boxing. There were four knockdowns inside of the first two rounds. And the beauty of it was, neither fighter dove to the canvas to elbow, punch or knee his opponent when he was down. That's sport, right? You don't hit a guy when he's down in boxing, you don't do it in football or hockey. So why is it acceptable -- even popular -- in MMA?

Maidana was the underdog and Ortiz the house fighter. But Maidana withstood the early barrage of punches and eventually wore down Ortiz, who had a terrible cut above his right eye, in the sixth round.

The reason why we are talking about MMA is that boxing just doesn't give us enough of these type of fights.

Don't cry for me ... Argentina. With Maidana winning the WBA interim junior welterweight title (what kind of title is that? another example of boxing shooting itself in the foot), it gives us the chance to write about all the great boxers who have come from Argentina. Ready -- Carlos Monzon, Nicolino Locche, Pascual Perez Victor Galindez, Jorge Ahumada, Oscar Bonavena, Gregorio Peralta, Angel Firpo, Juan Roldan, Alex Mitteff and -- just for beating Zab Judah and Arturo Gatti -- Carlos Baldomir.
