Marcos Maidana-Victor Ortiz: The Post-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - It can get better than Saturday night but it might be too much to sanely ask for.

25-year old Jr. Welterweight Marcos Maidana (26-1, 25 KO) put on a display of guts, professionalism, and punching power to upend the hoped for star train of 22-year old Victor Ortiz (24-2-1, 19 KO). Not shockingly, given the hype in the States, most of the day-after coverage has focused on Southern California’s Ortiz. Given the nature of the bout, the focus belongs on the Argentine in the opposite corner.

Dropped three times in the first two rounds, and outboxed in the two following frames, Maidana could easily have been forgiven had he folded. He did not. After a tongue lashing in his corner prior to the fifth, he found the fighter inside himself and started throwing right hands like there was no tomorrow.

Yeah, maybe he knew Khan was in the audience and was trying to get a rise out of him.

Khan was getting knocked down by feather fisted featherweights going up to 135. Maidana would smash him, which is why Khan will never face him. The only power puncher he's gonna face is Prescott coming off a loss.

This is My Post Fight Report Card for Ortiz-Maidana: Victor Ortiz told Max right after the fight "I took way too many punches and I won't go out on my shield for anyone!" That sums it up right there, the guy should change his career. He WON'T go out on his shield for anyone? Could you imagine what the other Oxnard former champ Fernando Vargas thinks of that statement? I can see Vargas now "What a *****!"....lmao

Didn't like Ortiz's I give up attitude. He should have tried to compose himself in a round or two and find a way to win. He probably thought that the path to greatness was gonna be easy. His corner didn't help much either telling him that he was behind the fight and that if he didn't fight they were gonna stop it. Instead of fueling him they were giving him a way out.

I dont even Khan can win his upcomming bout. Ill be impress if he does but don't give him a chance against any top contender. He fights like a very fast amateur. Unless Roach improved his defense don't see him dominating the top of the division

Raoch has greatly improved his defence. Whether by enough remains to be seen, but he is a far better fighter than he was last year.
