It hasn’t been a very good week for the European rumor mill.
The first bit of news from the other side of the Atlantic to be categorically denied was the false rumor of “a done deal” in place for heavyweight titlists Vitali Klitschko and Nikolai Valuev to meet in a unification match.
Now, the gossip bug is attempting to take a bite out of the rescheduled super lightweight title fight between Andreas Kotelnik and Amir Khan.
Originally schedule to take place on June 27, the bout was postponed three weeks after Kotelnik suffered a tooth infection and was forced out of training camp for a brief period.
Since then, there have been whispers of the bout possibly being cancelled altogether, and that replacements were being sought for the prodigious Khan.
Such reports have been refuted by Khan’s promoter, Frank Warren, who insists that the July 18 date is still intact, and it will be Khan contending for his first major title against Kotelnik.
“Rumors on certain boxing chat room forums have falsely suggested that Amir Khan's world title fight against Andreas Kotelnik at the M.E.N Arena on July 18th is off, and that Khan will fight John Murray or Shane Mosley,” said Warren in a statement on Saturday. “These rumors are totally false and without merit and should be disregarded.” [details]
