GUZMAN TO SIGN WITH NEW PROMOTER
By Socrates Palmer Jr
Former world champion Joan Guzman is heading towards the hands of a new promoter. According to his manager José Núñez, he and his fighter are in the process of completing a new co-promotional contract with one of the sports biggest players. Since 2004 Guzman has fought under the banner of the Sycuan Ringside Tribe. Núñez said that by early next week an official announcement will be made regarding Guzman’s future with his new promoter.
“Negotiation’s are in its final stages and just minor details are left to be worked out. We are excited about this move and we are with a company that has the ability to showcase Guzman on HBO and make him a superstar in this sport,” Núñez.
This appears to be a golden opportunity for Guzman, who currently owns a record of 29-0, with 17 knockouts. Guzman is seeking his 3rd world title in as many weight classes and looking to cement himself as one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world. Núñez says that Guzman will campaign at lightweight and that where he would like to have him back in the ring by the middle of the summer or by September the latest. Success is nothing new to the 32 year old Guzman; however the past 10 months have not been enviable. In September 2008 his much anticipated world title unification bout with Nate Campbell was canceled when he came in 3½ pounds over the 135 lb. limit. The humiliation of not fulfilling his contractual obligation and the public scorn by the media is something that hurt Guzman personally. Then on June 6th his 55 year old mother Juana Amaro, passed away from a cancerous brain tumor. This was one week after he celebrated Mothers Day with her in their native Dominican Republic. Guzman has returned to his residence in New York and resumed training an interview with him will be forthcoming.
