  • HOW good was GERRY COONEY???

I was just looking him up and he has the same kinda boxing moment style as Klitchko same height same reach... and this is how it played out against George... eeeeeee

do you think it could be the same??? I'm purely looking at it as strategy... don't turn this into hating bla bla bla....

Cooney-Klitschko is a very good comparison.

The only difference between them is the level of competition has gotten so much worse since Cooney's time. Heavyweight boxing is kind of a joke sport now, no elite athlete that big would choose to go into it when they can have so much more money and fame playing NBA or NFL.

He was pretty good but never actually proved how good he truly was. The top contenders he fought and beat were getting up there in age, for example Ken Norton (37-38 years old) and Ron Lyle (38 years old) who also had several recent KO losses.

Cooney remained fairly competitive against Holmes for 13 rounds although he seemed overmatched at first, going down in the second. In the end Holmes' repeated right hands finally wore Cooney down and the fight had to be stopped. From then on his career went downhill as he struggled with inactivity, promoters and drug problems/alcohol abuse.

He looked flat against Michael Spinks who landed on Cooney at will. Against Foreman, not having fought in 3 years, but having trained harder than for many of his past bouts, he seemed to have the better of the first round until getting caught by Foreman's bombs in the second.

Throughout his career he relied on one punch only, his left hook, one of the best in heavyweight history. Cooney had heart but never seemed to learn how to survive after being hurt which was brutally exposed by Spinks and Foreman.

Cooney never won a fight scheduled for more than 10 rounds, his best wins came at the hands of washed up Norton and Lyle, and then he got knocked out in his three biggest fights. Both Klitschkos>>>>>Cooney

The best performance I saw of Gerry Cooney was his fight against Jimmy Young. Young was smaller and older, seemingly on the decline, but he was motivated to beat Cooney.

Cooney showed exceptional handspeed for a man of his size, being able to double/triple up his left hook to the body and head in combinations. Young was game, took everything Cooney could throw and landed punches of his own.

The fight had to be stopped due to a severe cut on Young's eye, ending the fight early. If it had gone further, Cooney may have learned a lot more and perhaps would have been more prepared for the late rounds against Holmes.

I thought I knew allot about boxing... I do but it doesn't go back that far with specific fighters... why did he turn to drug and alcohol???

i laughed at George and his sneeky running uppercut hahaha it loked so weird but damn he still had allot of power... allot!

Did Cooney have a bum chin??? he was in with ken and holmes.

yeah i could see he had really good hand speed. Boxing was so deep back then. In your honest opinion how do you think Cooney would do now? even fighting Klitchko?

                    It isn't...

Cooney could'nt use his right hand...
Especially in the fight against Foreman.. Watch it.. stays by the side of his face, while he paws and leads SOLELY with the left..
Cooney, to my knowledge, only ever used it once to effect.. KOing a shot to pieces Ken Norton in his last fight..
Trust me.. Wlad aint no Cooney....
