WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley has upped the ante for his wish of fighting Manny Pacquiao. Interviewed by this writer’s daily Philippine radio show “Sports Chat”, Mosley disclosed that Pacquiao stands to earn at least $20 million if the current pound-for-pound king chooses the American champion as his next opponent. “I’m confident he’ll make more money with me than fighting (Miguel) Cotto. That fight is only big if they watch the fight in Puerto Rico, New York and the Philippines,” said Mosley “With me, you have the whole world watching the fight. My fan base is worldwide.” Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has been pushing for a Pacquiao-Cotto bout in November. Several reports disclose that Pacquiao may earn around $10-12 million against Cotto.
“I know Pacquiao is ready to fight but the only problem is Bob Arum. I understand Manny has to make the right decisions and for me, the fights that I want are the fights the fans want,” said Mosley. “This is not about the money. It’s about the legacy, it’s about fighting the best and be considered the best,” added Mosley.
In a separate telephone interview from his Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach expressed his surprise as to why Mosley seems to be desperately seeking a fight against Pacquiao.
“Mosley has made a lot of statements and he came to my gym twice. He asked me why Manny won’t fight him. I told him - we’ll fight you but can you make 144lbs? - He said ‘No’. And I said if you can make 144 then we’ll talk about it,” said Roach.
Asked about his preferred match, Roach insists Cotto has the inside track as formal talks are currently ongoing between the Puerto Rican’s camp and Team Pacquiao. “I’m not worried about Shane Mosley. The thing is we’re negotiating with Cotto right now and that’s the fight we’ll get the most money and the best deal,” added Roach
