It seems that everyone is comparing Victor Ortiz to Vargas. I have only seen Ortiz a couple of times and I really liked his game, but is he on the level that Vargas was at the same age? I personally don't think he is even close, but I want to hear your opinon.

Once he fights a big puncher like Campas or someone who can take his shots and keeps walking him down, I'll tell you.

Probably not... But more to the point... Does he grow to the size of a Walrus between fights.. This, I believe was the fundamental problem that rapidly & finally diminished Fernando's skill set... I think Ortiz can achieve the same, if not more.. We'll have to see...

lol why do we keep comparing him to Vargas? i know i automatically do..i guess cuz they both come from Oxnard and have that mexican battle it out style..both had messed up childhoods...

but i think at this point in his career..Ortiz hasnt fought the fighters vargas did coming up..vargas ran thru Campas and retired Raul Marquez..then it was ike quartey after that..so Ortiz needs to step up the competition.

I compare him to Panchito bojado except Victor has more determination and dicipline.

He actually reminds me more of a younger Cotto!..

Cotto was at 140 going up to 155 on fight night and so does Ortiz
Cotto is LEFT handed but fights ORTHODOX Ortiz is RIGHT handed but fights Southpaw.
and the styles of speed, power, ring generalship, and composure at such a young age make me see so many similarities..might just be me..but that's what I've been noticing lately..

Ortiz has a lot of POTENTIAL, and I think he could be better than Vargas. Only time will tell. He has a tough task ahead of him on Saturday against Maidana. Should he win that fight we will probably see him get a title shot against the winner of Khan-Kotelnic. We will learn a lot more about Ortiz in his next couple of fight hopefully. But he does seem to have a lot of talent and he seems like a great kid. Can't help but route for him.

I really thought Arnaoutis would test Ortiz in his last fight. I considered that a big step up for him. Then he just blew Arnaoutis out of the water. Same when he fought Maussa. Ortiz has really shined in his biggest fights so far.

No, he does not. He reminds me a little of Vargas though, but he does not have the skill set Vargas had.. And I'm not just saying that because Vargas is my favorite of all time.

I liked Vargas because he was "macho". A lot of people don't like Vargas because he talked a lot, but I liked that about him. Boxing needs fighters that know how to promote fights, such as Vargas and Mayorga!
