Uncovering the truth behind Floyd’s injury

The scheduled July 18 mega-fight dubbed “Number One versus Numero Uno” between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez was postponed at the beginning of the week after Floyd Mayweather Jr. was said to have incurred a rib injury as reported by Sports Illustrated.
A day after, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Shaefer issued a statement saying,
"Floyd Mayweather Jr. has damaged cartilage in his ribs and will stop training for his comeback fight until a doctor says he can resume.” And added
“He tried to work through it. He really did not want to postpone the fight, but it came to the point where he could barely sit,” Schaefer said. “He could not train, he could not move and there was really not much of a choice.”
Schaefer said both fighters have committed to rescheduling and a September date has been mentioned. But promoters and the fighters won’t agree to a date without the OK of doctors.
All of this happened amidst rumors that the fight between Mayweather and Marquez was having a hard time selling in the box office and that the bout was in danger of being re-scheduled or being scrapped altogether. Fans were skeptical about the injury since there were no supporting medical documents that came with the announcement of the injury and that the injury itself was difficult to prove or disprove since it was a rib cartilage injury.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered the same injury when he hurt his rib cartilage during the team's final game against the Philadelphia Eagles last year. Romo fumbled and was sacked then benched. His coach Wade Phillips said a flare-up of the pain caused Romo to collapse in the shower afterward.
A few days after Shaefer’s statement however, Philippine media outlet ABS-CBN published an interview with Floyd’s uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather and quoted him saying,
“There’s nothing you can do about it, it’s a fractured rib right now. He is resting and it should be a couple of months before he can go back,” said Roger.
To make matters more confusing, “Sugar” Shane Mosley who is an associate inside the Golden Boy camp told sports talk show “Morency” hosted by Gabriel Morency on Hardcore Sports Radio (Sirius 98) and The Score Television Network that Mosley says that the Marquez/Mayweather fight is being delayed because people don’t want to pay to see Mayweather. Mosley also said that Vegas is trying to lure Mexican fans into paying to see the fight by scheduling it on Mexican Independence Day. Interestingly enough, the statement Mosley made coincides with rumors that were swirling about the Mayweather-Marquez fight a few weeks before the announced injury.
I guess nobody gave the script to either Roger or Shane. Roger’s statement saying Floyd has fractured ribs is not consistent with Shaefer’s statement saying Floyd does not have broken ribs but a rib cartilage injury. And if Floyd deos indeed have fractured ribs, an X-Ray of the ribs should have been available for inquiring parties.
Mosley’s statement is more direct though. It confirmed the conspiracy theories fans were saying about the fight and further put Mayweather Jr. and Golden Boy’s credibility in question.
Fans were also speculating about the timing of Floyd's injury since it was unlikely that he was doing intense sparring this early into his fight for him to suffer a rib injury.

I had an investigative discussion this week with my friend and long time boxing fan and thinker John Lim regarding the conspiracy theories surrounding Floyd's injury. He hypothetically asked me why would Floyd go for such a ploy? I told him that if it was indeed true that this was but a stunt to push the fight further to help sell tickets, that if it was Marquez who pulled out with a bogus injury that it would've been so convenient and obvious for the Goldens to have the lesser named fighter to take the bullet for the team. It will also further hurt the betting odds and further swing it to Mayweather Jr.'s favor and further kill the interest for the fight since it's already a mismatch anyway based on what a lot of people think who have even ridiculed Floyd for fighting a smaller guy in his comeback fight. Also, since Floyd is coming back from a long hiatus, it's easier for him to make a believable case that the layoff had something to do with the injury. After the fight is rescheduled then you have people thinking Marquez does indeed have a chance at Mayweather since he is coming from an injury. And basing it from what Floyd said himself, it only makes sense- he did afterall say he fights for money.
Maybe both Roger and Shane were simply having brain-fart moments. Perhaps they too didn’t know the truth about Floyd’s injury. My job however is to report and collect facts about these types of things. And your job is to have an opinion. So fans, what do you think?
