We fans were definitely in for a treat. I had a BBQ last night at my crib and I did have peeps from Ghana at the house cheering for Clottey and of course since I'm Rican I had peeps rooting for Cotto. It made for interesting debating at my crib last night. At the end of the night we pretty much agreed on a few things:
First, Clottey's stock rose and the boxing world should recognize him as a damn good fighter with defense skills through the roof...if he becomes more agressive and lets his hands go the man is a wrecking machine.
Second, we all came to the conclusion that the ref that scored the fight 116-111 was sipping too much on the fire water cause no way did Cotto only lose 4 rds in that fight.
Third, we always talk **** about Lederman's card in previous bouts but last night he was dead on with scoring the fight 6 rds a piece and the only reason Clottey lost was due to the first rd knockdown. Quite honestly, if Clottey wouldn't have been knocked down he would have locked in at minimum a draw or possibly the win by winning the first rd.
Fourth, Cotto was damaged by Antonio's laced gloves with plaster since that cut openned up like a freakin Pinata. Cotto will probably never be the same and that cut will more than likely open up everytime he gets tapped in that spot...granted it was a headbutt last night but any opponent in the future will be zeroing in on the scar tissue on that eye.
Fifth, We all (at the BBQ) agreed that Tony's gloves were definitely carrying some weight since nothing really happened to Cotto early in the Margarito fight but after a few shots Cotto swelled up like never before and his eye was severly cut. Last night he got hit with many shots and got cut by the headbutt but he did not swell up like he did in the Margarito fight. Regardless, we will never truly know but it makes room for debate.
Finally, Cotto is a brave warrior to even continue fighting after that cut opened up in the third and fight for 9 more rds while being tagged with punches that couldn't be seen...this dude is something else. Gotta say that this guy fights through adversity very well. We all wondered how the fight would have panned out if the cut never opened up. Would Clottey be as aggressive? By the cut opening up, Clottey seemed more confident in his abilities prior to the cut opening up. Would Cotto have been more confident and agressive instead of boxing due to the cut? A rematch would make for unanswered questions but regardless of what happens I can surely say with a clear conscience that both of these fighters are tough SOBs and deserve shots at the premier guys who the boxing world hold in esteem as #1 p4p. Yes, I'm talking about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather and even Shane Mosely. All will make for entertaining matches. Long live boxing!
