By Cliff Rold - It appears the experiment will work if the results at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California on Thursday night were any indication. The idea from Golden Boy Promotions, to put on what amount to a televised club show spotlight for rising young fighters, produced a steady stream of entertainment both for those watching on cable network Versus and those watching at the website for Golden Boy subsidiary Ring Magazine. Can you dress up a pig and make someone kiss them as if the swine was a super model?
No.
And you cannot present minor league-like fights free on the Internet and expect the sport to be revitalized or even followed by anything but the most of hard core fans - the ones who spend their evenings glossing over old Ring magazines and watching fight films in their garage.
My pals at Golden Boy Promotions has been publicizing their new Los Angeles based Fight Night Club series for a few months now. The goal of Richie Rich Schaefer and the gang is to create a local buzz with fight cards featuring local talent and backed up with music, rock bands and dee jays.
Good concept, but when your promoting a boxing card, the fights have to speak for themselves.
Fight Night Club is hosted by Nokia Live in Downtown Los Angeles and televised by the Versus Network and free on Yahoo.com and Ringtv.com (Ringtv.com is owned and operated by one of Golden Boy Promotions satellite companies).
So are boxing fans finally receiving a quality product for free?
Of course not.
We are discussing a sport which puts some of its most marginal bouts on pay per view or premium cable, what would we expect from a free streaming Internet boxing product? Complete and utter garbage.
After looking at the line-up for the first Fight Night Club, featuring such hot prospects as Charles Huerta, Juan Garcia, and David Rodela. No disrespect to this hard working young fighters making peanuts, but how can you expect to market a new boxing series, aimed at creating a buzz around the sport, with fighters nobody knows about or even slightly cares about?
From the look of the line-up, the Versus Network just wasted the money they gave Golden Boy to televise this new venture. Sponsors Electronics Arts and Quaker State could have advertised on a hot air balloon travelling through Los Angeles for cheaper and with wider exposure.
As for the free, live stream on the Internet, hope you brought your looking glass, as you will have enjoyed the fights on a tiny player.
Come on Golden Boy, pony up on some of those streaming fees, or buy your own damn server, or use new P2P technologies to provide a large-sized player where we can WATCH the fights.
Complete and utter garbage, and par for the boxing course...even when it pertains to the sport's biggest promoter.
And one more fiery series of angry keys being pounded by my fingers....What the hell makes Golden Boy think they can mix boxing with live music in Los Angeles? If I wanted to spend $60 on boxing and clubbing, I would take myself to the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard, buy a ticket to watch a world class band and then wait to see which drunk patrons will throw down over the course of the night.Comment

They need to work a hell of a lot harder advertising this. Im sure this show is cheap to show, so there should be money left to market this better. Unless you get on the internet quite a bit you wouldnt know this was on.Comment

I enjoyed it. The important thing is for fights to be competitive... a true boxing fan should appreciate a good fight even if its not a title bout or between two hot prospects.Comment
