Looking back at it now, that's what I feel that the fight was all about.
After Margarito was busted for plaster in the Mosley fight, Cotto wanted Margarito banned from Boxing. Arum, on the other hand, was on Margarito's side and that made Cotto extremely pissed off. There was some tension between Arum and Cotto that was created from that situation.
I feel that Arum gave Cotto his farewell fight against Jennings, and is now ready to prime up his next new star, Joshua Clottey. In case you didn't know, both fighters are promoted by Top Rank.
This is very similar to the Morales vs Pacquiao II rematch. This fight came after Raheem had just white-washed Morales in a one-sided clinic, winning every round in the process. HBO felt that the rematch was pointless, but Arum shouted back at Merchant saying, "Of course the rematch will happen". Arum always has a "side-man" on the wing waiting for the perfect moment to match him up against his previous star to take his place. This is why Arum signed Valero, with a guarantee he will sooner or later fight Pacquiao, and wanted him to fight Marquez, and then Pacquiao after Pacquiao is on the way out of the game.
Back to Cotto vs Clottey...
Clottey keeps thanking Cotto for giving him the opportunity to fight him, but the man he should be thanking is Arum. I feel Cotto was ruined by Margarito's illegal plaster wraps. His chin was suspect in the first place and now I, and I'm sure Arum does as well, believe it's been cracked.
Against Jennings, Cotto was extremely cautious. Jennings has no place in the ring against Cotto, but was able to land jabs on him and circle him, boxing pretty well. Jennings has no strength at all, and folded quickly, but Cotto looked like he lost something. He was walking into Jabs, moving back flat footed in a straight line, and overall degraded.
I'm not hating on Cotto, but I see right through Arum's plot. JuanMa Lopez is my favorite fighter below 135, so I don't want to hear any hate BS from Puerto Rican fans.
