Win for Cotto could lead to big-money clash with Manny Pacquiao
WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto defends his title against Joshua Clottey this weekend with a win likely setting up a clash with Manny Pacquiao.
But while a clash with Pacquiao later this year would see Cotto scoop the biggest pay-day of his career, losing to 32-year-old Clottey in New York City's Madison Square Garden will lead to questions over his boxing future.
Puerto Rican Cotto goes into the fight the odds-on favourite, available on Thursday at 1/3 with Betfred and Skybet.
The fight takes place on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day parade, but despite the pressure on him, the 28-year-old is focused on the task ahead and putting talk of facing Pacquiao to one side.
"All I am thinking about is Clottey right now," said the 28-year-old ahead of Saturday's clash. "That’s the fight at hand and I cannot get side-tracked thinking about other fights or fighters.
"I know the (Pacquiao) fight is out there and is something that might be possible, but for now all I can think about is June 13 at the Garden."
Cotto has lost just one of his 34 professional fights, with 27 of his 33 wins coming via KO. Ladbrokes make him 11/4 to win via KO, TKO or DQ on Saturday.
Ghana-born Clottey is available at 11/4 with bet365 and Stan James. The former IBF welterweight champion goes into the fight with a record of 35 wins from 37 fights, with 20 of those wins coming via knockout.
Now residing in The Bronx, Clottey knows a win could see him in the mix with the likes of Shane Mosley as well as potentially Pacquiao, with bet365 offering 7/1 on him beating Cotto via KO, TKO or DQ.
