Klitschko-Chagaev: Boxing, And Not TV, Dictates History

By Jake Donovan - Once upon a time, the unwritten rule in boxing was that you simply don’t pass on a good heavyweight fight.

That was then, this is now.

June 20 was slated to have an action-packed, if not terribly competitive, heavyweight fight when Wladimir Klitschko, presently serving as the division’s de facto leader, was set to defend against brash former cruiserweight king David Haye. The bout was to air live on HBO in front of a sold-out crowd of 60,000 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. [details]

It's a fair enough article, although again I'd point out it was Haye who sold a fair number of those 60,000 tickets.

I could get more excited about this if I could foresee anything other than an easy win for Wlad, and I call it much easier than some seem to think. Who knows, maybe Chagaev will prove me wrong.

I'm well gutted that Haye can't fight Wlad but atleast we'll have a proper heavyweight world champion (as boring as this fight is likely to be). Can't blame HBO for not buying the fight, I wouldn't do a PPV for it. Luckily it'll be on Setanta for free!!

Its funny you say that... You have absolutely no guarantee that Haye would be any less an "Easy win for Wlad" or that that fight would be a snooze fest either..

It's REALLY funny how this fight seems to have turned EVERYONE into a fortune teller..

I hope some American network picks this fight up, I want to see it! It will be beyond ridiculous if a fight of this magnitude isn't aired in the States.

Would have definetly like to see Haye get knocked out, and it probably would have been more entertaining, but from a boxing stand point with all that is at stake this is the much bigger fight. ESPN or Shotime better pick this up!!!!!

I dont know its really hard to see any network picking this fight up on such short notice, I want to see it on my tv like all proper fight should be seen. If showtime picks this up it will most likely be on same day delayed coverage like they did with Vitali vs Peter. I think espn leads the way in picking this fight up but hard to say cause when they aired Vitali vs Gomez that didint turn out to be such a good fight. I hope there is some news soon.

Ibragimov is a slick smart southpaw,Klit is a smart technician.

So Southpaw vs orthodox, smart counter puncher vs smart technician.Yeah, this fight was really boring altough Ibragimov an Vlad are really good HW.Vlad was simply too big for Sultan(6.2 and 215 lbs).

Chagaev is just 6.1,however he can be agressive and put some pressure, the guy defeated twice Savon in amateur and Valuev,I guess he can fight against tall guys. We'll see.
I hope this fight'll be competitive and not just a one-sided chess match.I think Chagev don't have the speed to beat Klit.

I don't think Haye vs Jameel McCline woulda sold those 60 000 tickets. Both dudes sold the fight,Haye made the hype, but KLIT is THE STAR in Germany.

I hope they air this fight on ESPN and not showtime, cause i don't have showtime.

None at all, but I gave Haye chances where I give Chagaev none, and couldn't see a 'snooze fest' happening in that fight. It's all opinion, of course, but ultimately it's opinion that makes you pay to watch, or not. You call some right and some wrong. If it's on Setanta, of course, I'll be watching.
