example. mosley's fight with collazo at 147. he was at 154 before that.

did he move down or did he meet collazo at a catchweight?
By your own definition it would be JM contest , just the same now with Pac wanting 142 , if they agreed it will still be written in the books as a WW contest with a catchweight of 142 and Shanes WW title will be on the line .

they agreed to meet at a limit of 147. which is the definition of WW.

as long as they're under the limit they're fine.

now if they set a limit between 140 and 147 (between divisions) then that to me is a catchweight.

catchweight is also just a limit.
But thats a slip of the tongue , they agree to be under or on the limit . they dont agree to meet at the limit which would mean they must both weight 147 which is just not the case , the divisions are divided with a lower and higher range you are only concentrating on the highest limit they dont have to be that , on or under just not over it .

Pacquiao has fought at a catchweight just once, against delaHoya.
A catchweight is properly defined as compromise a fight-weight
between two fighters from different weight classes. This is most
clearly evident when the opponents are not from adjacent
          weight-classes (precisely as in Pac-dlH)

In the case of fighters coming from different but adjacent classes,
the fight weight is going to be within either one or the other's native
weight-class, so the term "catchweight" loses some of its clarity.

though some call the 147 fight with oscar a catchweight.

depends on your definition of catchweight.
This should be what a catchweight fight should be - a lightweight and a jr. middleweight fighting in the middle, at welterweight, which is an official division.

If there is no division in between, they should fight at either division. For example a 140 lb fighter fighting a 147 lb fighter should fight at either 140 or 147.

A catchweight is a fictional category to extract the most money from the paying public, that's all it is. It's a promoter's invention and we're bankrolling it.

Once. The DLH fight. I can see the debate about the definition of catchweight here and I tend to lean towards the DLH fight as a catchweight fight. It was agreed upon that both fighters will fight in the catchweight of the welterweight division.

pacquiao was at 135. delahoya was 154. how exactly was 147 exactly in the middle?

the fights that makes the most money are the fights people want to see.

i don't care about promoters extracting the most money from the public. that's their job.

i pay for good matchups. they can only extract money from me if it's a fight i want to see.

The DLH fight was a catchweight. It was a weight outside both fighters weight class which they had to meet in order to fight. Manny is now known by some as catchweight Manny, because of his sudden reluctance to fight WW's at WW and instead wants them dead on the scales so he can look great beating up great names. Roach and co are doing so much blatant cherry picking these days that it's beyond a joke now IMO.

As someone has pointed out earlier in the thread, PBF has fought guys who outweighed him by 10-20lbs on fight night. Why Manny can't do this, I don't know.
