by David P. Greisman - I believe a columnist should rarely write in the first person. I try to stay away from using “I.” It is difficult enough getting readers to care what you think. They don’t need to know that you think.
I believe it’s okay to break my own rules once in a while.
I believe these are my thoughts on the (slow) week that was and other things that are.
- I believe there hasn’t been a heavyweight fight I’ve been excited about in more than five years, when Vitali Klitschko avenged his brother’s defeat to Corrie Sanders. More than half a decade later, I was looking forward to seeing Wladimir Klitschko take on David Haye.
Wladimir Klitschko is the consensus number-one heavyweight. Haye is the trash-talking former top cruiserweight. The fight was being sold well: Haye spouting off, Klitschko promising to shut him up.
So with Haye dropping out of the June 20 bout with a back injury, it’s difficult to get excited about Klitschko against late replacement Ruslan Chagaev.
Chagaev, also a heavyweight beltholder, belongs in the ring with Klitschko. Klitschko, ranked as the top heavyweight by “The Ring” magazine, and Chagaev, ranked third, will decide who the best big man is. The heavyweight in the second spot is Vitali Klitschko. It’s doubtful that Wladimir and Vitali would ever face off unless the fiscal windfall made up for the siblings’ dust-up. [details]
