EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: KERMIT CINTRON
By G. Leon
GL: Cong**** on a great win over Alfredo Angulo. Can you give us some thoughts on your performance and tell us where you go from here? "I think that it was one of the best performances of my career. I think I finally got to do what I do best, and that's to box, jab and do what I do best. I was impressed that Angulo was able to take some hard shots from me. I think that going all twelve rounds taught me that I can go twelve throwing over 90 punches per round."
GL: Was there anything about Angulo that surprised you at all?
Kermit Cintron: "His chin. He was taking the shots and still coming forward. He reminded me of Margarito. I think the difference between him and Maragrito is that Margarito has more experience."
GL: Were you surprised you didn't get him out of there when you had him hurt in the middle rounnds?
KC: "Angulo is a great fighter. He's strong. I know that at times I hurt him, but he just kept coming forward."
GL: Do you plan on campaigning at 147 or 154 now that you have that option?
KC: "I feel great at 147 and then again I feel great at 154. I think that I'm going to take the most signifcant opportunity they give me from 147-160. I feel that's what I have to do to get the opportunities."
GL: Since you're mentioning 47-60, you and Paul Williams had a unification bout scheduled that fell through. Is that something you're looking to revisit?
KC: "If it makes sense to my team and if it makes sense money wise, we're definitely taking the fight."
GL: Tell us the guys at 147 and 154 that you're interested in fighting?
KC: "Right now at 147 you got the winner of Cotto-Clottey. Shane Mosley is waiting for a big fight with Mayweather or Pacquiao. A fight with any of the champions at 147 or 154 I'll take. I'm in the sport to be a world champion and to make a lot of money. I will take any big fight."
GL: What's the soonest we could expect you back in the ring?
KC: "Right now I'm enjoying this victory with the family and kids. I'm going to enjoy myself this summer, other than that I have no immediate plans. I will probably fight again in October or November."
GL: Was there anything you wanted to do against Angulo that you failed to accomplish?
KC: "I did pretty much what we set out to do. I kept the jab in his face. We boxed him, I kept the jab in his face for the most part and I did everything that Ronnie Shields wanted me to do. I was very happy with my performance. I was impressed with the way I looked."
GL: You usually look to stand and trade more often that you did against Angulo. Will you continue to implement your boxing skills or was that something you showed us because you knew it would work with Angulo?
KC: "It's the type of fighter I am, I just never had the chance to get it out of me. It's finally coming out of me. I'm finally being myself in the ring. I always looked good in sparring and training and for whatever reason I just looked to get a knockout in a fight and finally it all came together for me. People know I can ****, but now I showed people I can box as well. Having those two attributes is a great thing to have."
GL: Would you give Angulo a rematch?
KC: "I would definitely give him a rematch. But where do we go from there? I fought my heart out and I fought hard to win the fight and become the mandatory against Martinez. I'm looking forward to big fights now and a rematch with Angulo will do nothing for me but give me another victory over the same guy. I would give him the fight, but would my team, would Josh (Dubin) give him a rematch? Hell no."
GL: Closing thoughts?
KC: "I appreciate my fans for being there, the Puerto Ricans who stood behind me from day one. Hopefully that win gave me more fans now that I've showed people what I could do."
