For the record, I'm a pretty big Hopkins fan. I'm not saying he NEEDS to. Just, five reasons I think it wouldn't be such a bad thing. That being said.....
1. The Light-Heavyweight division could possibly get a TRUE champion. Not just that, it would be with a fight that is most wanted in the 175 pound division. Bernard Hopkins currently sits at number one, having lost the title to the now-retired Joe Calzaghe. If Hopkins retired, Chad Dawson would move into the one spot, with Glen Johnson following him up to number two. This would then set up the rematch everyone wants for this division anyway, and the winner would be RIGHTFULLY crowned the champion at Light Heavy.
2. He'd be one of the rare fighters that gets to retire on a GENUINE high note. Not just fighting someone who supposed to be equal to him or was once great then bailing. But, he beat a NEAR-PRIME world champion as the underdog. Like he also has been. It's a great note to end the song on.
3. There's no need to get permanently injured. With his defense style, it's hard to imagine him getting injured in the ring. However, you never know how quickly someone at his age might slip and leave himself wide open for the worst shot. He's successful, rich and has something to fall back on. No need to risk it all, especially with a beautiful family.
4. Honestly, if you think he has something left to prove, you're reaching. Sure, he could face Adamek, and that would be intriguing for several reasons. However, his legacy is pretty much cemented. Though, I will admit this fight is one of the only reasons he might WANT to stick around.
5. It would help the pound for pound ranking get refreshed. A new name would emerge for a longer period of time and some of the old guard would begin to force the young guns to take over. It's the only way this game continues to sizzle with new names.
Well, just my take. Felt like making a little list.
