How are we viewing this because Floyd comes in at under 150. How many "Natural WW" do that? I know a bunch of JrWW that come in at the same weight as Floyd and so do some LW fighters who blow up in weight.
Fighting in a divsion and actually being compared to others in that division based on size/weight is a different matter. Floyd isn't Cotto; Floyd isn't Shane; Floyd isn't Clottey and the others who blow up in weight who are big WW.
If you want to call him a WW because he is a legit 147 pounder come fight-night...I'm with you on that. But then what are the others below his division that are not 135 and 140 pounders come fight-night in their divisions?
And what does that make Shane, Cotto, Clottey, and the rest that blow up in weight?
What Floyd is now, I don't know...but he was an under 150 fighter come fight-night when he was active.
For increasing weight it depends on the fighter; it depends on his frame. JMM doesn't look like he has a small frame, as noted with his chest measurements.
Can you decline in speed and maybe even stamina as you climb up in weight? Yes, but again, it depends on the fighter. Somehow Pac has managed to climb up in weight and improved.
Floyd on the other hand looked better at 130-140.
Freddie Roach even noted that JMM looked stronger and seemed to punch harder when he moved up in weight. However, I would say JMM may have slowed down a bit either because of weight gain or age but I'm not positive if he has. His timing was always key for him and not so much speed.
Someone like JMM can concentrate on putting size/weight on their lower half because that is where it won't hurt him because of his style. If anything, years of keeping on a diet to make the lower weight class made his legs less massive which happens.
And his upper body even is big enough to handle extra weight. One thing he will have to do is do it slowly to keep an eye on how his stamina is with the increased weight.
If he is 141 at starting point...you increase a 1/2 to 1 pound a week and you should be fine to see where you are.
